01 00 00 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

SECTION 01 10 00 - SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

The purpose of this project is to abate the hazard from an abandoned coal mine feature located in a residential lawn at 754 Sunrise Place SW, Issaquah, Washington (King County). The feature has been designated as:

IS-205. An approximately 2-foot-by-3.5-foot opening was located along the alignment of a 3.5-foot tall rockery landscaping wall on the northern edge of the 754 Sunrise Place property. From the lower side of the retaining wall, the sloughed soil in the center of the feature is about 2.5 to 4 feet deep. Using a stainless-steel peat probe, soft/loose soil was determined to extend another 1.5 to 8 feet below the top of the sloughed soil, with larger penetrations observed to the north.

Maps showing the feature location are included on Plans C-1, C-2, and C-3. Work will consist of reclaiming the mine feature as summarized in Section 1.2 and as specified and shown on the plans.

1.1 Mine Feature Description and Location

Feature IS-205 Description. Feature IS-205 is very likely a mine-related subsidence. A collapse in the workings of the Bagley No. 1 and No. 2 seams, or a connecting shaft between the two seams, is the most likely cause of this subsidence. Coal seams in the area are mapped to be dipping at about 26 degrees downward to the north. Based on elevations in maps of the Newcastle-Issaquah Mine, the Bagley No. 2 seam water level workings could be very shallow in this area, with the feature mapping near the projected outcrop of the Bagley No. 2 coal seam; however, the exact depth to the workings is unknown. The Bagley No. 1 seam is located roughly 30 feet below the No. 2 seam, with the May Creek seam another 50 feet lower. The network of shafts and tunnels, connecting up to three coal seams at different depths below the feature, supports the likelihood that the feature is mine-related.

Location/Property Owner and Access. Feature IS-205 is in the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 33, Township 24N, Range 06E, in a residential front yard at 754 Sunrise Place SW, Issaquah, Washington. The property is owned by Mr. Paul Gore. The general access route from Seattle is shown on Plans C-1, C-2, and C-3.

1.2 Mine Feature Reclamation Methods

Feature IS-205 The reclamation for Feature IS-205, as shown on Plan C-4, generally consists of the following tasks:

Excavate the feature to a depth of approximately 8 to 10 feet in an effort to define a specific opening or throat.

19047-86 01 10 00-2

If the excavation reveals a well-defined opening:

• Install a contractor-designed temporary bulkhead as shown on the plans.

• Place reinforcing steel in the void above the bulkhead as identified on the plans.

• Place structural concrete in the void above the bulkhead as identified on the plans. The top of the final concrete surface shall be sloped to shed water toward the street, Sunrise Place SW.

• Grade the ground surface and place topsoil and seed above the concrete in all lawn areas that have been disturbed by the construction activity.

• Rebuild the rockery to match its condition on each side of the subsidence.

If the excavation does not reveal a well-defined opening:

• Backfill the excavation with structural concrete as identified on the plans.

1.3 Special Conditions

Work shall be accomplished in accordance with these specifications and the plans.

Contractor shall verify all levels, dimensions, and existing conditions in the field before proceeding.
