SECTION 31 10 00 - SITE PREPARATION
PART 1 -- GENERAL
1.1 THE SUMMARY
A. In its initial move onto the Site, the CONTRACTOR shall protect existing fences, houses and associated improvements, streets, and utilities downslope of construction areas from damage due to boulders, trees, or other objects dislodged during the construction process and clear, grub, strip; and regrade certain areas, in accordance with the Contract Documents.
1.2 SITE INSPECTION
A. Prior to moving onto the Site, the CONTRACTOR shall inspect the Site conditions and review maps of the Site, canal alignment, borrow sites, and facilities delineating the GOVERNMENT's property and right-of-way lines.
1.3 PREVIOUSLY CLEARED AREAS
A. The following is a summary of the portion of parcels within the Project’s limit of work that have already been cleared. Clearing of these areas is not required.

PART 3 -- EXECUTION
3.1 PRIMARY SITE ACCESS
A. The CONTRACTOR shall develop any necessary access to the Site, including access barriers to prohibit entry of unauthorized persons.
B. Utility Interference: Where existing utilities interfere with the WORK, notify the utility owner and the CONTRACTING OFFICERS REPRESENTATIVE before proceeding in accordance with Section 01 50 10 – Protection of Existing Facilities.
3.2 CLEARING, GRUBBING, AND STRIPPING
A. Clearing
1. Clearing generally includes the removal and disposal of all vegetation such as trees, orchards, vineyards, field crops, shrubs, brush, stumps, exposed roots, Attachment 11 Amendment No 0004 swolfert Polygon

down timber, branches, grass, weeds, and other vegetative growth from the surface.
2. The CONTRACTOR shall clear all portions of rights-of-way required for access and for all sites necessary for constructing the work under these Specifications to at least a depth of 3-inches.
3. Clear structures, pavement, sidewalks, concrete or masonry debris, logs, upturned stumps, loose boulders, and any other rubbish or objectionable material of any kind which would interfere with the performance or completion of the WORK, create a hazard to safety, or impair the subsequent usefulness of the WORK, or obstruct its operation.
4. Vegetation designated for preservation within clearing limits, and all vegetation outside clearing limits shall be preserved and protected.
5. Clearing adjacent to cut or fill sections shall be to a minimum distance of 3 feet outside of slope lines.
B. Grubbing
1. Grubbing generally includes removal and disposal of wood or root matter including stumps, trunks, roots, or root systems greater than one inch in diameter or thickness.
2. Within the limits of clearing, the areas below the natural ground surface shall be grubbed to a depth up to 24 inches below the ground surface.
3. Septic tanks, drain fields, and connection lines and any other underground structures, debris or waste shall be removed if found on the Site. Objectionable material from the grubbing process shall be removed from the Site and wasted in approved safe locations.
C. Stripping
1. Stripping generally includes removal and disposal of unsuitable organic material and topsoil, grass and vegetation root zones, and other deleterious material remaining in after the clearing and grubbing is completed.
2. In areas where stripping is required, the depth of stripping in agricultural land is anticipated to be less than one foot.
D. The removal of any trees, shrubs, fences, or other improvements outside of rights-of-way, if necessary for the CONTRACTOR's choice of means and methods, shall be approved by the CONTRACTING OFFICERS REPRESENTATIVE, arranged with the owner of the property, and shall be removed and replaced, as part of the WORK.
3.3 DISPOSAL OF CLEARED MATERIAL
A. Vegetative material from clearing and grubbing operations or that exists in excavated material shall be disposed of by removing from the work site in accordance with the General Conditions, or alternatively the material may be disposed of by "chipping and

scattering" in locations acceptable to the CONTRACTING OFFICERS
REPRESENTATIVE.
B. Disposal of cleared material by burning will not be allowed.
