About this file

This file contains a set of geologic logs and test pit logs documenting subsurface investigations at the Teton Dam Overlook site. The logs detail drilling results from multiple test holes (TH-23-01 through TH-23-10) and test pits (TP-23-1 through TP-23-12) conducted in December 2023, along with soil classification charts and laboratory testing data.

The logs document subsurface conditions including soil types, rock properties, and groundwater conditions. Key findings show the presence of rhyolite bedrock underlying fill materials and loess deposits. The soil samples were tested for grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, and other physical properties. Sample depths ranged from surface to approximately 10 feet deep. Notable materials encountered include sandy silts, gravelly clays, and weathered rhyolite bedrock. The data includes detailed descriptions of soil composition, weathering conditions, hardness, and other geotechnical properties that would be relevant for engineering design and construction planning at the overlook site.

Note:

Rock properties, including but not limited to, rock quality designation, fracture density, hardness, and weathering in rock core are presented below.

Fracture properties (orientation, spacing, openness, fillings, healing, surfaces, etc.) are described on the attached tables.

0.0 to 4.4 ft.: NO RECOVERY

4.4 to 4.9 ft.

FILL/RHYOLITE BOULDERS

Placed fill consisting of mostly reddish-brown rhyolite boulders, which have characteristics similar to rhyolite bedrock, but differs in color and has clayey/silty soil infilling in void space between boulders.

4.4 to 4.9 ft.: FILL, RHYOLITE BOULDER:

Reddish brown, fine-grained; intensely to moderately weathered (W6); moderately soft (H5), can be grooved by knife or sharp pick with moderate or heavy pressure.

LABORATORY TEST DATA FOR SAMPLE FROM

INTERVAL 4.4 to 5.9': Gravel 22.7%, Sand 27.1%, Fines 50.2%, %LL=27, %PI=24, Laboratory classification of sample is SANDY SILT WITH GRAVEL, s(ML)g.

*Sample was taken from entire SPT interval from

4.4 to 5.9'

4.9 to 5.7 ft.

PLEISTOCENE LOESS (Qel)

Massive, light gray to light brownish gray silt, clay, and very fine sand. Thickness generally 2 to >5 m (6.5 to >16 ft). Derived from deflation by dominantly southwest winds of silty sediment from outwash deposits during glaciation of the Snake River headwaters.

4.9 to 5.7 ft.: LEAN SILT, ML:

About 90% fines with low plasticity, low toughness, rapid dilatancy; about 10% fine to coarse, hard, angular sand; trace fine, hard, angular to subangular gravel; maximum size, 1/4 inch; dry; brown.

5.7 to 5.9 ft.

PLEISTOCENE HUCKLEBERRY RIDGE TUFF

(Qyh) Compound cooling unit of crystal-rich welded rhyolitic ash-flow tuff erupted from the Henrys Fork Caldera of the Yellowstone Plateau. Major phenocrysts are sanidine and quartz, with sparse plagioclase and pyroxene. Phenocrysts are abundant (20-30 percent) in lower part of unit, becoming smaller and less numerous (<5 percent) near the top. Most of the unit is composed of light-gray to grayish-pink densely welded devitrified tuff with well-developed eutaxitic texture. A weathering horizon consisting of about 2-10 m (6.5-33 ft) of red clay and partially decomposed tuff is locally present on top of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff.

5.7 to 5.9 ft.: RHYOLITE:

Gray, fine-grained; intensely to moderately weathered (W6); moderately soft (H5), can be grooved by knife or sharp pick with moderate or heavy pressure.

1.5 to 3.0 ft.

FILL/RHYOLITE BOULDERS

Placed fill consisting of mostly reddish-brown rhyolite boulders, which have characteristics similar to rhyolite bedrock, but differs in color and has clayey/silty soil infilling in void space between boulders.

1.5 to 3.0 ft.: FILL, RHYOLITE BOULDER:

Reddish brown; moderately soft (H5), can be grooved 1/16 inch (2 mm) deep by knife or sharp pick with moderate or heavy pressure; intensely weathered (W7); fine to medium grained.

3.0 to 4.8 ft.: NO RECOVERY

4.8 to 6.3 ft.

4.8 to 6.3 ft.: RHYOLITE:

Gray; moderately hard (H4), can be scratched with knife or sharp pick with light or moderate pressure; slightly weathered (W3); fine grained;

trace soil infilling.
