SOLICITATION NO. 140P8422Q0079

CONSTRUCT EAST PARK ENTRANCE SIGN AND PARKING PULLOUT

PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK

SAN BENITO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

SITE VISIT – JULY 27, 2022

SITE VISIT SUMMARY:

A site visit was conducted on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

Participants met at the proposed Entrance Sign Site, approximately 400 feet south of turnoff from Hwy 25. From there the group travelled to the nearby NPS stockpile of stone in the Chalone Maintenance Area to be used for the project.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM SITE VISIT AND RECEIVED TO DATE:

Q1: Per SECTION 01 11 00 - Summary of Work 1.1 A. C. 1, the Park will salvage and stockpile the native stone to be used as veneer for the sign. Question: Will we be able to see the stockpile of stone during the site visit?

A1: Yes, interested parties will be able to view the stockpile of stone during the site visit.

Preference will be to use the stone that was salvaged from the former sign when it was demolished. If additional stones are needed, NPS will provide them.

Q2: Is there enough stone?

A2: Yes, it was agreed the stockpile seems to have enough stone for the single pillar and sign base. The stone was salvaged from a previous similar sign. See attached pdf, "stone stockpile Chalone".

Q3: Can you clarify if you want the appearance of the Peaks View sign in detail 3/SN1 (very large stones in straight courses), or detail 2/SN1 (smaller rounded field stones)?

A3: Detail 2/SN1 is only meant to show the stones supported on the footing. The stonework shall be in irregularly stacked courses, similar to Peaks View sign at Pinnacles National Park but scaled down in size. See the attached example from the Bear Gulch kiosk within Pinnacles National Park, which is closer to the entrance sign in scale, and uses stones approximately the size/shape of the ones in the stockpile (12" high, 16+" long). Within the attachment are visual examples of acceptable and not acceptable stonework, as follows:

Q4: Can the stepping back between courses of stone be simplified or eliminated since a lot of stones are irregular? There are some bigger stones, how to use them around the concrete core?

A4: The stepping back between courses is desirable but can be simplified. Also, the concrete core can be modified or shrunk to accommodate larger deeper stones at the base. The Contractor/fabricator must provide shop drawings for approval that show core dimensions, footing, rebar, sign mounting and finished outside dimensions (to stone surface). The Contractor is expected to ensure excellent collaboration between the fabricator and stonemason to ensure that the stone is carefully chosen and laid out in advance to get the desired fit, pattern, and dimensions.

Q5: Do the salvaged stones need to be cleaned up?

A5: Yes, old mortar shall be knocked off where it will be exposed or interfere with bonding.

Stones shall also be turned to hide quarry marks.

Q6: Can NPS provide the sign manufacturer with JPEG files or CAD of the Arrow and Panel signs?

Q6: Yes, upon request NPS will provide .eps file of the arrowhead artwork to successful contractor. NPS will also provide .eps file of the Pinnacles outline to be used on the panel design. Contractor/fabricator is responsible for final graphic layout of the panel shown in the drawing, using the specified dimensions, fonts, colors, and Pinnacles outline. Successful contractor to submit the proposed layout for NPS approval with the shop drawings.

Q7: Is the site visit mandatory? If not, can we visit independently to look at site conditions?

A7: No the site visit is not mandatory, although highly encouraged. Yes, interested parties can visit the site any time independently, without formally notifying the park. An updated site map is provided that includes directions to the rock stockpile, as follows:
