APPROVED EQUAL

Note the following approved amendment to the specification and plans for solicitation 140P8319Q0051. NPS has approved the Yardney IMA-65 Specialty Media Filter as a substitution for the ATEC filters. All other specs pertaining to section 46 61 00 remain the same.

If and only if, the contractor elects to use the Yardney IMA-65, the plans can eliminate the saturator and install a system for liquid sodium permanganate prior to filtration with the specifications for install provided below.

The request was processed in accordance with Section 01 33 23, Submittals, Part 1.3 E.

1. Specification 46 30 00, Chemical Feed Equipment

Part 2.2, B Chemical Storage Equipment, Potassium Permanganate Saturator

• Eliminate the saturator

• Use Carus Carusol sodium permanganate, 20% solution strength, NSF certified, 5 gal container with valve installed in bung to allow operator to tilt contain and pour product into smaller contain and add to solution tank at a prescribed amount based on the treated water level in solution tank.

• 50 gal solution tank with lid, pump to be mounted on wall mount panel directly above allowing for the removal of the tank’s cover

• Contractor will provide safety equipment and training for the liquid permanganate set up to include: rubber gloves, secondary containment for 5 gal container to be stored on, and operator training on handling, storing, and applying chemicals

Like any strong oxidant, CARUSOL-20 liquid permanganate should be handled with care. Protective equipment during handling should include face shields and/or goggles, rubber or plastic gloves, rubber or plastic apron. If clothing becomes spotted, wash off immediately; spontaneous ignition can occur with cloth or paper. In cases where significant exposure exists, use of the appropriate NIOSH-MSHA dust or mist respirator is recommended.

The product should be stored in a cool, dry area in closed containers. Concrete floors are preferred. Avoid wooden decks.

Spillage should be collected and disposed of properly. Contain and dilute spillage to approximately 6% with water and reduce with sodium bisulfite. Deposit sludge in an approved landfill or, where permitted, drain into sewer with large quantities of water.

As an oxidant, the product itself is non-combustible, but will accelerate the burning of combustible materials. Therefore, contact with all combustible materials and/or chemicals must be avoided. These include, but are not limited to: wood, cloth, organic chemicals, and charcoal. Avoid contact with acids, peroxides, sulfites, oxalates, and all other oxidizable inorganic chemicals. With hydrochloric acid, chlorine is liberated.

IMA-65 Specialty Media is a revolutionary silica sand based filtration media designed for the removal of iron and manganese without the use of potassium permanganate. The unique micro porous structure of IMA-65 efficiently removes dissolved iron to as low as 0.005 ppm and manganese to 0.001 ppm.

After initial activation, the IMA-65 acts as an oxidation catalyst with immediate oxidation and filtration of the insoluble precipitates.

The media has been used extensively in a wide variety of applications in Japan for over 30 years. IMA-65 has been tested and certified by the Water Quality Association in accordance with NSF/ANSI 61.

Iron and Manganese Removal

IMA-65

Specialty Media

Advantages ■■ Eliminates Potassium Permanganate. Operates with continuous injection of sodium hypochlorite at low residual levels (0.1 to 0.3 ppm).

■■ Wide pH range. Stable and satisfactory performance at pH

5.8 to 8.6.

■■ High Flow Rates. IMA-65 can operate at linear filtration velocities up to twice that of conventional media with a corresponding reduction in capital equipment costs.

■■ Higher Operating Temperatures.

Maximum operating temperature of 113 °F (45 °C).

■■ Long Life. IMA-65 is not con-sumed in the process, providing considerable advantages over other processes or media.

■■ Regeneration Not Required. After initial activation, only sodium hypochlorite feed is required.

■■ System Compatibility. Physical properties are similar to that of competitive media, allowing conversion to IMA-65 without major hardware modifications.

■■ Arsenic Removal. IMA-65 has been shown to be effective in the removal of arsenic associated with iron-containing influent.

If necessary, ferric chloride can be introduced to treat waters with low influent iron levels or to enhance removal when treating waters with high levels of arsenic.
