About this file
This document contains questions and answers related to solicitation number 140P6324B0005 for road safety improvements at Badlands National Park. The project involves constructing asphalt turnouts and installing bollards and boulders. No start date has been set but seeding must be complete before work begins. The park has previously used boulders from a local quarry and prefers solid boulders over composite blocks. Delivery method is at the contractor's discretion provided transportation meets legal requirements. Seeding will be conducted under a previous contract so the new contractor does not need to reseed. Examples of previously used boulders are shown.

Is there a proposed start date for the construction to begin, and will the asphalt turnouts need to be completed before any of the bollards are installed?
Preposed Start Date is still open for discussion at this time due to needing to have a fair estimate of time required for the asphalt work to be done. After Seeding is completed at the two Gravel Pullouts then work can be started on those including bollards and boulder placement. In all likely hood after the award the Notice to Proceed will be issued allowing materials to be ordered and prepped. Such as Stone and bollards. When Estimated Delivery Time for Materials is in, the exact start date will be issued.

Has the Park previously used the boulders from the pictures that were handed out at the site visit? If so do you know who was the supplier. Also, would the Park approve the use of natural granite boulders? Attached are a few pictures of materials we would propose to use.
Yes, the photos that were handed out at the site visit and attached, those boulders are currently in use in the park. Centennial Pit in the Spearfish area provided them. I do believe that the owner has changed, but there are a couple of quarries up in that area capable of supplying such materials. Park approval of any other stone would need physical sample (small) and then to run through compliance and cost analysis. Do not recommend pricing from other stone. Compliance for such can take 3-6 months.
(See pictures at the bottom of this document for examples.)

For the delivery of the boulders is there a required method of transporting? Side dump or flatbed.
No. Delivery and Handling of materials is up to the contractor. All materials being delivered must meet or exceed requirements of SD DOT and any other state that they are transported through.

The plans do not call out for any seeding, will the contractor be required to reseed around the bollards?
The Seeding is part of Previous Contract to be completed before work is to begin.

Are you wanting red limestone boulders that are from a limestone pit or are you wanting concrete blocks made from crushed limestone?
Solid boulders from a pit or quarry, no composite concrete.
