About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a solicitation for road safety improvements at Badlands National Park. The solicitation seeks construction services to source and provide red or dirty limestone riprap ranging in size from 3x3x3 to 4x4x4. While red limestone is preferred, bids can propose alternate solid stone types, though these would require additional compliance review. As the centennial quarry has no rock meeting the 3x3x3 specifications for the upcoming season, larger 4x4x4 sizing is recommended to accommodate ADA clearances between stones. The solicitation is issued by the National Park Service Midwest Region for contract number 140P6324B0005.

| The pit manager at the Centennial Pit and there is no availability of rock that meets the requirements of 3x3x3. He said as they are producing the rock from the quarry that the sizing of the rock is not that size. Would the National Park Service accept rock that is smaller in dimension? The quarry pit manager said that there is no available rock for the upcoming season that would satisfy the requirements of NPS. Would the National Park Service accept rock that is smaller in dimension? Is red limestone the only acceptable rock for the project. Would a SDDOT Class D riprap satisfactory for this procurement. If the rock is limestone, is it required to be red limestone |
| Red/Dirty Limestone is not just provided by the centennial pit. Please feel free to source from another quarry. At this time Red Limestone is the only solid stone that is preapproved through the Compliance Process. The park recommends submitting bids off of that stone. Other stones would be considered but would need to be run through compliance and that process could be time consuming. If the rough size of 3x3x3 is not available, the park recommends going larger such as rough 4x4x4 knowing that the center to center spacing for ADA would need to be adjusted accordingly to have appropriate clearance between the stones. |
