Material Overview and Fabrication Specifications
Wood Western Red Cedar for NPS Park Identity Signs:
WRC for NPS Park Identity signs shall be laminated clear heart, kiln-dried vertical grain with a maximum moisture content not to exceed 12%. Cedar shall be selected per grading rules of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Associa-tion. Components of all panels including end caps shall be fabricated from the same grade.
Panel Size:
Sign panel shall be fabricated based on dimensions and format specified in the Sign Drawing Package. Panel sizes, specifications, dimensions, typography, color, and proportions shall not be altered.
Panel Assembly:
Panels shall be constructed using clear heart, vertical grain, kiln-dried wood through, glued up one board thick using 2” nominal size dimensional lumber (2" x 6", 2" x 8", 2" x 10"). Panels shall be glued using a phenolic resorcinol moisture resistant adhesive with all surface joints covered. Panels shall be clamped and cured for a minimum of 24 hours or per the manufacturers specifica-tions. Panel fabrication shall occur in air temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit during drying, adhesive application, and curing.
After curing the panel vertical edges shall be finished with a 2" x 2" vertical end strip, faced glued and reinforced with 3", No 12 stainless steel Phillips flathead screws placed 8" on center. Screw heads shall be counter-sunk to a depth of 3/8" and filled with glue-in wood plugs.
After end strips have cured the panels shall be machine planed to a finish thickness of 1-1/2". All surfaces shall be finish sanded smooth and face and back edges shall rounded to a radius of 1/8".
Panels shall not be finished with hand planes, hand-held belt, orbital, or vibrating sanders.
Graphic Layout:
Graphic layout of panels shall be as shown on the attached drawings. Graphics to be accurately reproduced from plotted outline template or directly from computer to router based on full size digital vector art. Contractor shall use an accurate grid to ensure layout is aligned vertically and horizontally.
Typography shall be NPS Rawlinson Heavy and Frutiger Bold as shown on attached drawings. Typography shall not be altered, manipulated, or changed. Substitute fonts shall not be used.
NPS Rawlinson Heavy shall be Machine-routed unless otherwise specified with a 90 degree “V” router bit with a 1/8" vertical, flat sidewall inset. Routed letters shall conform to the same size artwork. Routing depth shall be uniform. Corners of type smaller than 3" cap height shall have a radius no greater than 0.0625. Type larger than 3" cap height shall have a corner radius no greater than 0.125".
Frutiger Bold typography shall be Machine-routed unless otherwise specified using a vertical-sided, flat-bottom router bit. Routing depth to be 0.375".
A 0.250" deep dado shall be routed in the panel between the main panel and the overbar. Dado height shall be determined based on cap height of main typography (0.0833 x cap height - .25" for 3", 0.333" for 4", .50" for 6"). Dado shall be routed in to the main panel field with the overbar being full height. Routedz dado shall be painted same color as main panel field.
NPS Alternate Panel layouts receive a vertical dado in addition to the horizontal dado. Vertical dados shall be routed to a depth of 0.250". Vertical dado width shall be based on the cap height of main typography (0.0833 x cap height - .25" for 3", 0.333" for 4", .50" for 6").
Vertical dados shall be painted as specified below.
Panels receiving an NPS Arrowhead shall be Machine-routed to a depth of 0.125" using a vertical-sided, flat-bottom router bit in Overbar section of panel for NPS Standard Panel layouts or Main Sign Panel for NPS Alternate layouts. Arrowhead shiloutte routed in the sign panel shall be oversized by 1/8" to accommodate inset NPS Arrowhead.

After paint sign panels shall be fitted with 0.1875" thick painted (or as otherwise specified) fabricated steel “z-clips”. Arrangement of clips shall be as specified on drawings and fabricated to facilitate attachment of panel to sign steel post and frame structure.
Steel Steel Sign Structure: Wood panels shall be attached to a steel post and frame system. Sign assemblies shall be fabricated with A-36, A-500B, or A-847 tubular steel upright posts (4" x 6" x 1/4" wall, 8" x 6" x 1/4" wall, or as otherwise specified)
Steel posts shall be mounted per the specified drawings and can include direct embedment of posts or baseplate mounting.
Steel post length shall be cut per specified drawings.
Posts shall be cut to allow flush alignment of post and sign panel.
Sign interior structure shall be a break-formed or welded “c-channel” fabricated frame with 1-1/2" frame edge returns. Frame width shall be determined by the panel mounting method. For signs with internal steel posts and fully exposed sign panels the frame shall be fabricated to the same width as the vertical posts. For signs with visible out bound posts, where the panel insets between the vertical posts, the frame shall be fabricated to allow panel face and post face to align flush.
Steel frames shall be fabricated with A-36, A-500B, or A-847, x 3/16" steel plate. Frames shall be break-formed or cut steel plate and welded. Frames shall be fabricated square and true and shall not exhibit warping or bowing.
Internal weld edges shall be clean and continuous.
Exposed edges shall be welded clean and ground smooth.
Steel frames shall be fabricated with a 2" x 2" x 3/16" steel angle corner clip weld detail as shown on drawings.
Fabricated steel frames shall be attached to vertical posts with a 3/8" – 16 x 1" long stainless steel hex head cap screw with matching stainless steel flat washer. Vertical post shall be drilled and tapped to accept cap screw.
Where required and as specified on drawings sign frames shall include a 2" x 2" x 3/16" vertical steel support bracket welded to the frame top and bottom.
The bottom of the frame shall be drilled with a minimum of 3, 1/4" diameter weep holes for water drainage.
Panels shall be attached to the steel frame with a bent, fabricated “z-clip” The “z-clip” shall be fabricated from 3/16" thick steel per the drawings. “Z-clips” shall be attached to sign panels with a No. 10 x 1” long stainless steel pan head, slotted wood screw. “Z-clips” shall be drilled per drawings with a 1/4" diameter hole to accept the pan head screw. Hole location for “z-clips” is determined by the clip location. Holes for bottom clips are drilled on the “long” side of the clip. Holes for top clips are drilled on the “short” leg of the clip.
Base plates shall be fabricated with A-36, A-500B, or A-847, x 1/2" steel plate. Steel plates shall be fabricated to fit vertical posts per the attached drawings. Base plates shall be cut straight and clean with 90 degree corner angles. After cutting base plate edges shall be eased to a radius of 1/8". Base plates shall be drilled at each corner to accept j-bolt mounting hardware. Refer to the drawings for j-bolt specifications.
The center of the base plate shall be cut out to allow insertion of the vertical post. The vertical post shall be continuous welded on plate top and bottom. The top weld shall be ground smooth and clean.
The top of the vertical post shall receive a 3/16" thick post cap welded to the post. The post cap shall be filet welded continuous on all sides and ground smooth and clean.
