About this file
This document is a Request for Information (RFI) for the Grist Mill Foundation Repair project at Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site. The RFI provides detailed specifications for foundation and masonry repair work at the Blow-Me-Down Dam site in Cornish, New Hampshire. The contract includes seven primary line items with base and optional/additive components: (1) Repair Concrete Foundation, (2) Controlled Demolition of Concrete Encased Stone Wall, (3) Reconstruct Concrete Encased Stone Wall, (4) Stone Masonry Building Wall Surface Repairs, (5) Brick Masonry Repairs, and two optional items for surface repairs to a stone masonry retaining wall and reconstructing the concrete encased stone wall with exposed stone matching the existing mill structure. The work involves precise restoration techniques, including removing and replacing concrete encasements, repairing stone and brick surfaces, filling voids, repointing joints, and ensuring historical architectural integrity at the southeast corner of the grist mill foundation.
The project requires careful water control, sediment management, and environmental considerations, with specific provisions for protecting the site's wood turtle habitat. Construction methods include using pneumatic hand tools, low-pressure water jets for stone preparation, and matching existing stone placement and orientation. The contractor must take preconstruction photographs, provide temporary cofferdams and dewatering systems, and restore all disturbed areas to their original condition. The work is part of the Department of the Interior's National Park Service Northeast Region's preservation efforts at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, with a focus on maintaining the historical structure's architectural and structural integrity.
