About this file

This document is an industrial hygiene monitoring report prepared by Criterion Laboratories, Inc. for the Valley Forge National Historical Park. The purpose was to evaluate airborne concentrations of cresols adjacent to stored items coated with creosote. Air monitoring was conducted on December 14, 2023, and the results indicated cresol concentrations below the detection limit and well below OSHA and NIOSH exposure limits. The report concludes that the air quality within the barn has not been significantly impacted by the stored creosote-coated materials.

The related federal contract opportunity is for the conservation of wooden artifacts at the Valley Forge National Historical Park in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The solicitation number is 140P4224Q0115 and the procuring agency is the Department of the Interior National Park Service Northeast Region. No additional details about the scope, pricing, or timeline of this contract opportunity are provided in the information given.

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.1 Purpose

Criterion Laboratories, Inc. (Criterion) was requested by Hannah Sanner of Valley Forge

National Historical Park to perform air monitoring for cresols at 1060 Knox Tindle Lane in Tredyffrin Township, PA.

The purpose of the monitoring was to evaluate airborne concentrations of cresols adjacent to stored items coated with creosote. Air monitoring was conducted on December 14, 2023.

1.2 Personnel

The monitoring was performed by Ms. Julie Mui, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) of

Criterion. The report was written by Mr. Eric Wysocki, Project Manager and reviewed by Mr. Michael Panepresso, VP of Operations, both of Criterion.

1.3 Conclusions

Area samples collected in the barn, adjacent to creosote coated materials, indicated cresols concentrations below the detection limit of the analytical method. Concentrations were well below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Permissible exposure Limit (PEL of 5 parts per million (ppm) and the National Institute for

Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Recommended Exposure Limit (REL) of 2.3 ppm.

The results indicate air quality within the barn has not been significantly impacted by the stored creosote coated materials.

2.0 PROJECT OVERVIEW

2.0 PROJECT OVERVIEW

2.1 Procedures

Area sampling for creosote was conducted using battery powered pumps calibrated at approximately 0.2 lpm connected with a section of tygon tubing to an

XAD 7 sorbent tube. The samples were analyzed for cresols by EMSL Analytical in Cinnaminson, NJ in accordance with the NIOSH 2546 method.

2.2 Measurement Results

Results of the monitoring are found in the Analytical Results section of this report, and are summarized as follows:

Area monitoring conducted in the barn indicated cresols concentrations of < 0.18 parts per million (ppm).

2.3 Discussion

Airborne concentrations of creosote in the barn were below the detection limit of the analytical method as well as the OSHA PEL and NIOSH REL. The results indicate air quality within the barn has not been significantly impacted by the stored creosote coated materials.

Creosote coated materials should not be burned, otherwise the compound may become an inhalation hazard. Special disposal requirements might be required for creosote coated materials.
