CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS INDUSTRY DAY
February 11, 2025
The National Park Service (NPS) Denver Service Center (DSC), 12795 W. Alameda Parkway, Denver, Colorado seeks to gain knowledge from the industry regarding an exciting opportunity to raise and reconstruct the historic seawalls around the Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine, FL. The project consists of 1,355 feet of seawall construction along the Matanzas River.
This announcement is to gage interest in the number of firms who would attend a Site Visit which would allow prospective Seawall Contractors to view the site as well as provide input for the development of these requirements. Preferred alternatives have been selected for each wall type.
Background:
This project will reconstruct roughly 1,355 lineal feet of seawall adjacent to the Castillo de San Marcos
National Monument in St. Augustine, FL. Each section will be raised to match the elevation of the back of the center wall. Reconstruction of the seawall consists of five different segments:
• North Wall is constructed out of poured concrete with coquina shells as the main aggregate measuring 280 feet long. This wall will be removed and replaced with a new design that will recreate the historic character of this section while maintaining the current alignment.
The North Wall preferred alternative is to demolish the existing seawall and replace it with a new cast-in-place seawall with steel reinforcing and coquina aggregate.
• North Transition Wall is constructed out of large coquina blocks measuring 40 feet. This wall will be removed and replaced with a new design that will recreate the historic character of this section while maintaining the current alignment.
The North Transition Wall preferred alternative is to demolish the existing seawall and replace it with new stacked stone wall consisting of a stacked granite foundation with exposed granite at the water line and visible coquina on top courses.
• Center Wall is a massive counterguard outwork comprised of coquina masonry walls founded on granite blocks measuring 740 feet long.
The Center Wall preferred alternative is to replace existing edge stones at the front and back of the seawall with fitted concrete coquina block and to replace tabby infill with new tabby to produce a resilient, slip resistant surface. Additional work includes repointing of the granite wall.
• South Wall is constructed out of coquina block with a concrete cap measuring 225 feet. This wall will be removed and replaced with a new design that will recreate the historic character of this section while maintaining the current alignment.
The South Wall preferred alternative will demolish the existing seawall and replace it with a new stacked stone seawall consisting of a stacked granite foundation with exposed granite at water line and visible coquina on the top courses.
• South Transition Wall is constructed out of concrete panels measuring 70 feet and will be replaced in kind in a new alignment to connect the current historic wall to the new seawall being constructed by the Florida DOT.
The South Transition Wall preferred alternative will demolish the existing seawall and replace it with new structural steel sheet pile seawall, consistent with the adjacent FDOT seawall design, with cast in place concrete caps that include coquina aggregate.
The solicitation for the project is scheduled to be posted in 2025.
