About this file
This amendment to a solicitation provides additional details for annual fire protection services for Grand Canyon National Park. The services include inspection, testing and maintenance of fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fixed sprinkler pumps, and fire extinguishers across park facilities. The period of performance is from April 3, 2023 to April 4, 2024. The contractor must also provide a technician physically capable of conducting a two-day through hike of the canyon to inspect inner canyon locations such as ranger stations, bunkhouses and helipads. The hike involves a steep descent on the first day, followed by an ascent on the second day totaling over 20 miles and 19 hours of hiking while carrying necessary equipment and supplies. Some logistical support for transporting the technician's gear may be available from the National Park Service on a case-by-case basis.

14. DESCRIPTION OF AMENDMENT/MODIFICATION (Organized by UCF section headings, including solicitation/contract subject matter where feasible.)
Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) Annual ITM fire sprinkler, fire alarm, fixed sprinkler pumps, and fire extinguisher inspection, testing and maintenance. The purpose of this solicitation amendment is to provide the following answers to questions posed by potential offerors:
1. I see that the sheet shows that they were last tested in 2019. Is this correct? If so, are the 6 and 12 year services updated?
Extinguishers were last serviced in 2021. As far as I know they are current on the 6/12 services. There are likely some out there in the park that are not current on service.

2. if the extinguishers are inoperable and need to be replaced, it says to submit a proposal.
What about the extinguishers that are part of the
2 day hike? Should we bring spares in order to replace them during the 2 day trip?
Hiking replacement extinguishers into the sites at Phantom Ranch and Havasupai Gardens (formerly
Indian Garden) would be impractical and potentially dangerous for the technician.
Extinguishers from the inner-canyon sites that are found to need replacement can be provided after the fact and NPS personnel can transport them in (by foot, mule, or helicopter) and remove the bad extinguishers.
3. The services will also consist of ending with a two day through hike on the Corridor to inspect the inner canyon ranger stations, bunk houses, and helipads. The hike is a through hike of the Inner
Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim on the North
Kaibab Trail to Phantom and up the Bright Angel to the South Rim over two days. Day one drops ~6000' in elevation and does checks at Roaring Springs, Cottonwood, and Manzanita. It is a long day- 14 miles and approximately 12 hours. The next day we do checks at Phantom Ranch, then hike up to Indian
Garden for checks, then up to the South Rim- up
~5000' over 7.8 miles. The contractor must provide a technician in physical shape to make the rigorous hike with equipment (not including replacement extinguishers), food, provisions and appropriate.
backcountry gear.
It may be possible for some of the technician's equipment/supplies to be brought in and out of the canyon by NPS's regularly scheduled cargo transports by mule or helicopter. That would need to be worked out with us case-by-case as space is not always available and there are size/weight constraints.
