Solicitation # 140P1522Q0020; Amendment# 1; GLAC- Glulam Columns Questions and Government Answers.
General
1. Question: Is some or all the requested glulam columns to be treated wood?
Answer: They do not need to be treated, but the adhesives used need to be exterior grade adhesives.
2. Question: Kindly advise us on the grade and species of item required?
Answer: Those are in the specs. They need to be appearance grade and the laminations need to be Douglas Fir/Larch. More specific on appearance grade they need to be Premium
3. Question: I am working with multiple vendors for pricing on the subject solicitation. The first quote I received is for glulam beams measuring 6 3/4 inches x 12" and 6 3/4 inches x 13 1/2 inches. Are these sizes acceptable in lieu of the 7 inches x 11 1/2 inches and 7 inches x 13 inches called out in the NPS solicitation? The length of the beams would be the same as what is stated in your solicitation.
Answer: Those sizes are not acceptable. These sizes match the current columns and this is building is listed on the national historic register so these columns need to match exactly in size. I fully understand that these will be custom sizes.
4. Question: Can you please clarify for me the specification calling for "zero deflection" of the glulam's. Not sure that is possible. Is "zero camber" what was meant by chance?
Answer: Yes, zero camber is what was meant.
5. Question: Does your customer have a particular wood preservative product in mind, will the glulam's be in contact with the ground? Of course, adding any type of preservative will add color tone to the Doug Fir glulam's.
Answer: These glulams do not need to have a preservative added to them. They will be primed/painted prior to installation and they will not be sitting directly on the ground. Some of them sit in metal brackets roughly 6" off the concrete and others sit in brackets on 3' stone walls. I just wanted to make sure in the spec's that whatever glulam they will be providing will be able to be used in an exterior application.
