Removal and Pruning of Hazard Trees in Fruita Historic District

This project will take place at Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey Utah within the Fruita

Historic District.

The work for this project was determined from a hazard tree report completed in Winter of 2023, by a certified Arborist. A total of 42 trees were identified as hazardous.

Of the 42 identified trees, 3 need full removal, 38 need hazardous deadwood removed to eliminate hazards and improve tree structure and health. 20 are adjacent to structures (houses, sheds, fences, etc.) which cannot be damaged or altered, 9 are adjacent to roadways and may require temporary road closure/flagging (but will not require a UDOT road permit), and 34 require pruning/reduction/thinning of live wood to improve tree structure and health.

The identified trees will be pruned of all dead and dying sections, including live limbs that are potential hazards to visitors, employees, structures, and vehicles. All deadwood greater than 4” diameter will be removed back to a living junction, according to industry standard arborist practices.

• The work will consist of the operations detailed above, debris cleanup, stump grinding and hauling off site of all limbs, trunks, cut up sections and any and all chipped piles if applicable. The surrounding areas of all work will be cleaned and clear of all and any debris. Vehicle tracks will be removed by hand raking to restore area to previous condition and appearance prior to the performed work. At the locations of tree removal, it is required that the stumps will be ground to a minimum of two inches below ground level.

• All equipment, material and tools needed to complete the project will be supplied by contractor. Contractor will ensure that all tools and equipment are in good working condition to ensure no fluids or fuels leak occur during the project.

• If any such spill occurs Contractor will immediately contact park staff to report the spill.

• All required safety equipment e.g. Signage, barricades, fencing, flagging, will be provided by contractor and in place to secure work site at all times during the project.

Required and applicable PPE will be provided by the contractor.

• Contractor will communicate with park representatives to coordinate work, area closures, access needs, etc. prior to work beginning. Due to 2024 Scenic Drive pavement resurfacing in the Fruita area, contractor may need to work with park liaisons and resurfacing contractors to coordinate access into and work within the Fruita area, which may be closed to the public beginning April 29, 2024.

• Any public road closure permitting will be completed by contractor in coordination with park representatives.

Park staff will ensure access for the contractor to the sites for the proposed work to be completed. This work will be completed no later than three weeks after the agreed upon start date of the project.
