About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding solicitation number 140M0123Q0059 for carbon sequence simulation software licenses. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management seeks a software package to model carbon capture, utilization, and storage projects for regulatory analysis over timeframes up to and exceeding 1000 years. Key capabilities include reservoir simulation, geomechanical modeling, plume visualization, and vertical well performance modeling. The software must integrate with common subsurface interpretation platforms and be deployable on workstation clusters of up to 36 cores. Training will be required for engineering teams of 10-15 people with varying experience levels across six office locations. Both compositional and black-oil modeling functionality are desired to evaluate depleted oil and gas reservoirs. Uncertainty analysis, field optimization, and multiple case simulations will be part of the workflow.

Attachment 1 Questions and Answers

Request for Quotation (RFQ) 140M0123Q0059, Amendment 0001

Number Questions and Answers Question No. 1 How many concurrent reservoir simulation projects are expected at the highest demand season within the next year?

Answer No. 1 That is currently TBD.

Question No. 2 Will BOEM be building their CCUS simulation projects from beginning to end within the chosen software package, or will they be receiving data from an external source and/or regulating existing oil fields?

Answer No. 2 As it appears now, the entire project will be built by BOEM, but the process may change.

Question No. 3 What is the expected number of reservoir engineers, or percentage, who will also be performing geological data and geomodel analysis?

Answer No. 3 Four to eight engineers, possibly more depending on workload.

Question No. 4 What is the expected number of engineers, or percentage of, that will be requiring geomechanical simulation (eg. Rood Deformation, stress changes calculation, rock displacement, rock failure, etc.) ?

Answer No. 4 Four to eight.

Question No. 5 Will BOEM be conducting uncertainty analysis, history matching, and field development optimization projects for CCUS or only acting as a regulatory entity?

Answer No. 5 As a regulator, all relevant aspects of CCUS should be considered part of the workflow.

Question No. 6 Is BOEM performing reservoir fluid characterization on a regular basis? Is PVT analysis capabilities used for regulatory purposes or users will extensively spend time modeling fluids?

Answer No. 6 Yes, dependent on data availability and end-goal.

Question No. 7 What’s the average number of reservoir engineers in each of the 6 BOEM locations, as well as their current reservoir simulation experience? This will help us better understand and customize the technical training needs for our phase‐in plan.

Answer No. 7 You may expect 10-15 per class with varying levels of expertise from entry-level to senior.

Question No. 8 Does the scope of the software need to also include the software for simulation models pre and post-processing? How important is it for pre and post-processing software to be fully integrated with commercial geological and geophysical platforms, for example as part of subsurface uncertainty assessment workflows?

Answer No. 8 It needs to be able to assimilate and reintegrate results from industry-standard subsurface interpretation platforms.

Question No. 9 Does the scope of the software need to also include coupling with finite-element geomechanical simulator (or similar), for example as part of rock and faults integrity assessment workflows?

Answer No. 9 Geomechanical processes need to be modeled in 4D. Changing regulations may dictate future requirements.

RFQ 140M0123Q0059

Amendment 0001

Question No. 10 Does the scope of the software need to also include a black-oil module, for example as part of the faster history matching workflows in depleted oil and gas reservoirs before simulation CO2 injection

Answer No. 10 That is not a requirement.

Question No. 11 Is there a requirement for sector modeling and grid refinement in the areas of interest such as fault planes, wells, lease blocks, considering that some CCS models can be region scale? Do you expect to work with 1 well models or full field or multiple fields models?

Answer No. 11 Sector modeling is not a requirement; all scales may be investigated based on regulatory requirements.

Question No. 12 Are there requirements for results and Plum visualization?

Answer No. 12 Plume modeling and visualization is a requirement.

Question No. 13 Do you intend to run simulations with parallel computing power? How many processors do you use for simulations or plan using?

Answer No. 13 The simulations will be run on Dell T7920 workstations. Workstations have two processors, 18 cores per processor. A server cluster may be utilized in the future.

Question No. 14 Expectations on time to simulate injection time, and monitoring time ( 50 years, 100 years, 1000 years)?

Answer No. 14 Up to and beyond 1000 years Question No. 15 Do you need to run multiple cases for the purpose of sensitivities or uncertainty studies?

Answer No. 15 Yes Question No. 16 Do you have existing compositional model? Will you be provided with compositional models? (For depleted oil and gas reservoirs) Answer No. 16 The simulator needs to work with old existing models and future models, from either an outside source or in-house.

Question No. 17 Does the scope include generation of the vertical flow performance (VFP/VLP) curves for injection wells?

Answer No. 17 Yes.

Question No. 18 Is there a requirement for more detailed flow performance, i.e. reporting flow in different segments of the well, cross flows, flow along the wellbore?

Answer No. 18 Understanding flow performance is a requirement.
