CONTRACTOR QUESTIONS GOVERNMENT RESPONSE

1. Flue spaces in the drawing are approximately 3” which creates a problem with fire suppression as the minimum allowable is 4” so that water can pass through.

1. Not applicable because the sprinkler system is existing to remain in this scope and sprinkler pipe is mounted above the racking.

2. Unless they are planning to use order pickers and reach trucks many of the aisle widths are going to be far too narrow for standard forklifts.

2. The shorter aisles of 7’‐9” to 8’‐7” in width indicated in the Rack Drawings sheet A112 are in place for the use of order pickers. Forklifts will be used elsewhere.

3. We need to understand what is being stored on the racking. So a proper HMIS (Hazardous Materials Index Sheet) would need to be provided.

3. See response #5.

4. We would need a 3rd party Fire Company to confirm that current sprinkler system is adequate for warehouse in reference to said HMIS.

4. Replacing the fire sprinklers is outside the scope of this project and is included in a future phase that is already designed. See response #5.

5. [Questions] 3 and 4 are under the assumption that all work is to be permitted.

5. The National Interagency Fire Center is on federal property and therefore this project will not be submitted for permits from the local and state government. Follow the requirements indicated in the specification section 014000 and Rack Drawings sheet S001.

6. We need to understand pallet sizes and weights as we need to be able to provide proper engineering and specs for each piece of racking.

6. See Steel Rack drawing S501 for weights. Pallet sizes vary however the standard used is 40 inch width by 48 inch length by 36 inch high where two pallets are placed on each 8 foot to 9 foot (nominal) wide beam pair, and three pallets are placed on each 12 foot wide (nominal) beam pair.

Rack type #49 and #54 listed on Steel Rack drawing A110 are in an area that uses an order picker and are not spaced vertically to accept a full height pallet.

7. Elevations are not accurate. All elevations in racking are on a 2” on center basis and many listed are odd numbers. We need to understand where they would like those elevations and if there are truly 68 or not?

7. The elevations listed on Steel Rack drawing A110 are nominal therefore round up to the nearest on center height.

8. If there are truly 68 elevations are they prepared for the engineering cost that will incur?

8. Seismic Anchorage calculations have already been done that did not require separate calculations for each individual configuration. The resulting anchorage requirements are listed on Steel Rack sheet S501. See Steel Rack sheet S001 specification “5. Deferred Submittals” for required engineering submittals of pallet racking and components.

9. Does the government want to salvage 100% of the racking

9. No. The contractor is to remove all of the existing racking indicated in the Steel Rack drawings. Per Steel Rack sheet A012 note 1, “…Coordinate with government on items that require to be salvaged.” This is intended for components that are attached to the racking such as conduit. Per Steel Rack specification section

017329.1.3 “Develop waste management plan that results in end‐of‐Project rates for salvage/recycling of 50 percent by weight of total waste generated by the Work”

10. Should the old racking be on pallets? 10. See Steel Rack specification section 017329.1.5; this is a means and methods to be determined by the contractor in the waste management plan.

11. Where will the old racking be transferred to, what building, and distance?

11. See Steel Rack specification section 017329.1.5; this is a means and methods to be determined by the contractor in the waste management plan. Remove old racking off‐site.

12. Reinforced angle to be installed on the interior and the exterior of the wall or just the interior?

see [sheet S501 detail 1]

12. See Egress drawing S501 detail 2.
