About this file

This document contains questions and answers related to solicitation number 140L0623Q0022 from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management for the demolition of existing sheds and their replacement in Florida. The project involves pouring reinforced concrete pads for new metal storage sheds not exceeding 18 feet in height, with eaves between 10 to 14 feet. Concrete slabs must meet state and local codes for pre-fabricated metal buildings. While standard details are not provided, contractors should work with metal building manufacturers to ensure slab specifications meet requirements for footings, rebar, vapor barriers and installation. Silt fencing will not be required as the project site is on flat, disturbed ground.

Demolition of Existing Sheds and Replacement, FL

Questions and Answers

1. Q: Are we able to put 4x8x16 concrete blocks instead of pouring concrete pads? Please let me know if that a suitable substitution.

A: No. Concrete blocks are not a suitable substitution for a poured reinforced concrete pad and therefore could not be used for this project.

2. Q: What is the proposed height of the shed structure to be built?

A: Total building height should not exceed 18ft with roof sloped appropriately to eaves.

3. Q: What is the required eave height of the new metal storage shed?

A: Eave Height should be a minimum of 10ft and not more than 14ft.

4. Q: Can you please provide the details on the specs for the: ramp, vapor barrier, re-bar, footing, and slab?

A: Concrete slab should meet State/local code requirements for Florida and West Palm Beach for pre-fabricated metal buildings and meet the requirements established by the pre-fabricated metal building manufacture. Since the metal building manufactures differ in their requirements no standard details can be provided. Potential contractors are advised to work with the pre-fabricated metal building manufacture to ensure the concrete slab meets their requirements, in terms of footings, rebar, vapor barriers, and installation techniques.

Generally, the slab should be a minimum of 4 inches thick to accommodate the weight of the building, with minimum 12"x12" footings (note at least one pre-fabricated metal building manufacturer requires footings to be 24" x 24" deep). The concrete apron around the building should have a drop of 3/4" and extend at least 4" further outside the edge of the building. Ramps should match up with roll-up doors to allow vehicle access from grade. But again, details and specifications should meet code and manufacturer's requirements.

5. Q: Will a silt fence be required to erect during the project?

A: Silt fence will not be required as the project is on flat ground within a develop/disturbed area.
