140L0621Q0063 Potholing Questions 6/24/2021 – With Reply 6/28/2021
Magellan Pipeline Comments in green.
1. Can pothole spoil be dumped onsite?
a. Potholes are done by hydro-excavation. There should not be a spoil pile.
b. The spoil is sometimes dumped onsite to dry out, but if dry truck is used the material
(spoil) can be used to backfill just back into hole. It can be dumped on site following the guidance of the damage prevention operator on site (see contacts below).
2. Is there water access anywhere close?
a. I am not aware of water access near the project.
3. How big of hole is needed?
a. Big enough to positively identify both sides of the pipeline, if pipeline is near four feet of depth. Typically, a pothole is a small hole approximately 10” to 1 ft diameter.
b. The pothole may need to be relocated on the pipeline of if large obstruction (i.e., large rock) is encountered… a large excavation must be avoided.
4. What material do the holes need to be backfilled with? For example, a certain depth of sand over the pipe?
a. Native soil from existing pothole to cover pipeline.
5. Do the holes need to be backfilled and compacted in lifts? If so, is compaction testing required?
a. No compaction required due to how small the pothole site is.
b. No testing required.
6. How many potholes per line? Just find each line once?
a. One pothole on center line of proposed roadway alignment at the pipeline intersect.
7. Timeline for the project?
a. After NTP 45 days for contract. After work is scheduled with one call, work will be completed within time of ticket.
• Please make sure your contractor calls 8-1-1 and has a valid one-call ticket in place before pothole work commences.
