About this file
This is a Statement of Work for X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) imaging services to be performed for the USGS Earthquake Science Center. The contractor will collect high-resolution CT scans of sand samples from 1 cm diameter cores obtained from fault zones and shear zones, then process the imagery to support the government's earthquake deformation research. Specific work requirements include reconstructing and filtering the CT scans, segmenting and labeling individual grains, and calculating physical properties including grain size, sphericity, convexity, coordination number, contact normals, grain orientation, aspect ratio, bulk density, and fabric anisotropy.
The contractor must deliver raw transmission radiographs, reconstructed XRCT images in TIFF format, filtered XRCT images in TIFF format, labeled XRCT images in TIFF format, a spreadsheet containing physical properties data, and a comprehensive report summarizing methods and findings. Results must be provided by download within 180 days of receiving samples, with samples arriving in multiple batches rather than all at once. Work will be performed at the contractor's laboratory, with performance running from the date of award through September 28, 2027. The government will provide the sediment samples, and no government-furnished property is required from the contractor.

Statement of Work
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
A. Introduction High resolution X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) images are used by the USGS Earthquake Science Center to document characteristics of sediment samples. These samples, obtained from fault zones and shear zones, provide insight into the deformation history of near-surface materials.
B. Background XRCT imaging is similar to a CAT scan, but the technology is more precise such that smaller objects (silt and sand) are discernable. This fine resolution is required for studying deformation of sand grains. The Earthquake Science Center has projects examining the deformation of sand grains in fault zones. However, the capability to collect XCRT scans and process the imagery is not available in the Earthquake Science Center.
C. Scope The purpose of the work is to complete XRCT scans produce processed images. Processing includes segmentation, mapping and extracting data on grain-scale geometry for use in subsequent analysis.
II. WORK REQUIREMENTS
A. Technical Requirements.
1. Describe specific work requirements and/or work products
• Collect high-resolution CT scans of sands from 1 cm diameter cores
• Reconstruct high-resolution CT scans of the samples
• Filter high-resolution CT scans of the samples
• Segment, binarize, and uniquely label grains within the samples
• Calculate the physical properties of the samples (grain size, sphericity, convexity, coordination number, contact normals, grain orientation, aspect ratio, bulk density, and fabric anisotropy)
2. Criteria for acceptance of Service
• Raw transmission radiographs of the samples
• Reconstructed X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) in TIFF format
• Filtered XRCT images in TIFF format
• Labeled XRCT images in TIFF format
• A spreadsheet with the physical properties of the samples
• A report summarizing methods and physical properties within 180 days of receiving XRCT scans of the samples.
B. Deliverables.
1. Characteristics for work product described in II.A.1., identified by name and quantity.
USGS will provide the samples. Contractor will provide data files and report.
2. Delivery dates for work/product to be completed and point of delivery.
