About this file
This document presents detailed Technical Requirements for a specialized scientific instrument, likely a carbon coating unit for scientific sample preparation. The technical specifications outline requirements for a unit compatible with a Safematic CCU-010 HV, with key features including a compact countertop footprint (24 x 48 inches), a dry scroll vacuum pump capable of achieving 5 x 10-5 torr in under 10 minutes, and a rotating stage accommodating up to four 25 mm epoxy mounts or three petrographic thin sections. Additional critical specifications include an automatic carbon thread re-threading system, a thickness monitor with 0.5 nm accuracy, and automated software for controlling the entire coating process. The document also specifies support requirements such as online technical assistance, initial system maintenance training, and shipping arrangements through the USGS's FedEx account, with an option for future modular upgrades like adding a sputter coater head.

Technical Requirements
Proposed unit must meet the minimum technical specifications attached, and all parts interchangeable (including sputter head) with the Safematic CCU-010 HV.
Feature Specification Total instrument footprint (including accessories)
Fit on a standard 24 x 48 inch countertop (61 x 122 cm)
Vacuum pump Dry scroll, or other oil free pump(s) that can achieve 5 x 10-5 torr in less than 10 minutes
Monitor Thickness monitor with 0.5 nm accuracy, located in an equivalent position to target samples.
Stage
Rotating stage, at least 100 mm diameter. Must accommodate up to four 25 mm epoxy mounts or up to 3 standard petrographic thin sections.
Option to purchase larger stage allowing for coating 6 standard thin sections
Target Material
Carbon thread
Automatic re-threading capability so desired carbon thickness can be achieved without breaking vacuum.
Automatic re-threading to limit user intervention, accept when carbon thread is exhausted.
Carbon thread will be included with the initial installation of the system.
Control Automated software with programmable recipes for the entire coating process, from vacuum pump down to terminating deposition after desired thickness is reached and venting the system.
Upgrades Option for modular addition of sputter coater head (such as Au, or InSn oxide targets) by user at future date, and quick exchange between carbon and sputter heads.
Support/Training
Online technical assistance and system diagnostics with instrument, through TeamViewer or other online applications.
Initial purchase will include training on system maintenance including, pump and valve replacement.
Shipping USGS to pays for shipping through our own FedEx account—we will provide shipping labels when units are ready to ship
