About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for RFQ 140G0226Q0045 concerning the procurement of an Oxford Instruments Ultim Infinity 170 detector or equivalent system for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center in Denver, Colorado, supporting the Energy and Minerals Mission Area.

The document addresses a vendor inquiry regarding whether a standalone detector system that does not interface with existing Oxford Instruments equipment can be quoted. The USGS response clarifies that any quoted system—whether Oxford brand or an equal product—must be fully compatible with the existing Oxford detector platform to enable simultaneous, synchronized data collection from multiple detectors. The detector must be compatible with Oxford E1 and X4 control boxes and integrate seamlessly with existing Oxford Unity and C-Nano detector hardware. The detector and its operational software must support automated workflows for collection of large-area datasets while incorporating data captured simultaneously from existing Unity and C-Nano detectors. The USGS emphasizes that this level of functional integration is essential because it reduces total data-collection time, minimizes beam exposure on sensitive samples to preserve sample integrity, ensures consistent and scientifically valid datasets, and enables acquiring and managing multiple data streams within a single unified software environment. While salient characteristics are based on Oxford system performance and compatibility, equal products that demonstrably meet all integration and performance requirements will be considered.

RFQ 140G0226Q0045

Oxford Instruments Ultim Infinity 170 or equal for TheUnited States Geological

Survey (USGS), Geology,Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center in

Denver,CO, supporting the Energy and Minerals Mission Area.

1. Question #1

“Can a vendor quote a standalone system that will not interface with the existing Oxford

Instruments equipment mentioned in salient characteristics 2.b and 2.c?

2.b. Detector must be compatible with Oxford E1 and X4 control boxes and integrate seamlessly with existing Oxford Unity and C-Nano detector hardware.

2.c. Detector and its operational software must support automated workflows for collection of large-areadatasets and incorporate data captured simultaneously from existing Unity and C-Nano detectors.”

USGS’s Response: The Government requires that any quoted system—whether the Oxford brand or an equal product—must be fully compatible with the existing

Oxford detector platform to enable simultaneous, synchronized data collection from multiple detectors (e.g., EBSD/EDS or EDS/BEX combinations). This level of functional integration is essential to meet USGS analytical and operational requirements because it significantly reduces total data-collection time, minimizes beam exposure on sensitive samples to preserve sample integrity, and ensures the production of consistent, scientifically valid datasets. Additionally, acquiring and managing these data streams within a single, unified software environment— rather than operating separate software packages for each detector—reduces analysis time, lowers the risk of user error, and supports reproducible workflows.

For these reasons, the salient characteristics necessary to meet the Government’s minimum needs are based on the performance and compatibility offered by the

Oxford system; however, products that are equal and can demonstrably meet all of these integration and performance requirements will be considered.
