About this file
This document provides a list of reference material matrices and additional information related to a federal contract opportunity for the decommissioning of the USGS Reston Radiochemistry Laboratory. The reference materials include various radioactive sources and reference standards in matrices such as water, brine water, sediments, fused samples, soils, rocks, and acids. Sample preparation processes involved include radon and radium emanation, radium co-precipitation using manganese oxide fiber filters, alpha spectroscopy, uranium and uranium-thorium analyses, fusion, acid digestion, burning filter papers, and ion exchange. The federal contract opportunity is solicited by the US Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants for the decommissioning of the US Reston Radiochemistry Laboratory. The document lists reference materials and sample preparation details to provide relevant technical context for the scope of work under the federal contract.

Here is a non-comprehensive list of reference material matrices and additional information:
Ra-226 NIST 4968-55 is a capsule.
There are three The Nucleus ‘button sources’ Ba-133, Cs-137, Co-60.
Unopened ampoules include SRM 4326 Po-209, SRM 4966 Ra-226, SRM 4321B U- 238.
Dilutions of SRM 4321B are in 1N HNO3.
Dilutions of 228Ra are in HNO3 (1N HNO3 & possibly 1N HNO3).
Th-229 dilutions are in a liquid, likely an acid.
Th-230 ds diluted with 1N HNO3.
The 232U/228Th Harwell Standard is in several liquid dilutions. One is labeled 2N HNO3, the other two are not.
One Ra-226 glass bottle is diluted with 1N HCl.
Depleted U is diluted with 0.1 M HNO3.
U-236 is diluted with 2N HNO3.
Two thorium nitrate and uranium acetate are chemicals from their original supplier.
Some reference materials are in a soil matrix.
The sealed Pylon radon generator uses a radium stearate as a source. There is another Pylon source for testing their Lucas cell detectors.
There are numerous radium, radon generators in 250 ml flasks. They are likely in dilute acids, too.
Here is a list of possible matrices related to sample preparation processes.
1. Radon and radium emanation: water, brine water, sediments, sediment sample in 250 ml double deionized water, rocks in sealed copper containers, natural gas.
2. Radium co-precipitation: original matrices: water, brine, produced waters, leached manganese oxide fiber filters, possibly redissolved fused samples; final matrix: barium-radium co-precipitate (barium sulfate plus sample impurities ).
3. Radium Field Concentration (concentration of radium isotopes in around 100 gallons of water on manganese oxide fiber filters): matrix manganese oxide. Low activity standards (Th-232 and Ac-227) on manganese oxide fiber filters and in sediments were used to measure Ra-223 and Ra-224.
4. Alpha spectroscopy: water, possibly redissolved fused samples. Samples use a low activity Harwell standard spike for U and Th analyses.
5. U and UAR: water, brines, acids, possible produced waters, possibly fused samples.
6. Fusion: soils, rocks.
7. Acid digestion: soils and rocks.
8. Burning off of filter paper in crucible: most likely matrix barium-radium sulfate co-precipitates.
9. Diluting acids: acids and double deionized water.
10. Acid digestion with 8N HCl and/or 7N HNO3 and sometimes a few drops of concentrated HF: rocks, soils, minerals, waters.
11. Ion exchange: 7N HNO3, 8N HCL, 0.1N HCl. Used to remove interfering isotopes. In addition to sample and standard concentration, I believe ion exchange was used in the separation of Ra-224 and Th-234.
12. Wet chemistry.
13. Radon solubility (Ostwald Coefficient) studies: Radon in water and organic liquids at various temperatures.
