Recreating Safely Every year, thousands of visitors explore Alaska safely—and you can too. It’s a vast and remote landscape, but a few simple precautions can help keep you safe. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Alaskan adventure!

You are in the heart of Alaska’s Eastern Interior. From historic sites to spectacular scenery, there are opportunities all around you. Get out there and start exploring your public lands!

Welcome to Tok!

Travel time may change based on weather, traffic, and road conditions. Always check the latest travel information before you start your trip.

* The Poker Creek Border Crossing is open for limited hours, June through early September. You will also need to cross the Yukon River on a ferry that is closed at night and occasionally for maintenance.

Delta Junction 107 miles (172 km) 1.75 hrs

Glennallen 138 miles (222 km) 2.5 hrs

Eagle 168 miles (270 km) 5 hrs

Fairbanks 202 miles (325 km) 3.5 hrs

Anchorage 318 miles (512 km) 6 hrs

Alcan-Beaver Creek Border Crossing 89 miles (143 km) 1.75 hrs

Poker Creek Border Crossing (to Dawson)* 117 miles (188 km) 2.5 hrs

Dawson City 185 miles (298 km) 4.25 hrs

Whitehorse 387 miles (622km) 7.5 hrs

Cell phones and GPS are wonderful navigation aids. But reception can be limited, and batteries don’t last forever. Make sure you have a paper map of the area as a backup.

Work out your route ahead of time and tell others where you’re going. Check the weather, road conditions, and fire risk. Decide where you’ll stop for supplies. Remember, it could be a long way before the next gas station!

Alaskan summers can be surprisingly hot, and dehydration is deadly. Make sure you have lots of water—and don’t forget to drink it!

Weather changes quickly here. Make sure you’re always prepared with warm layers and rain gear.

Talk, sing, and make plenty of noise as you explore so animals know you're coming—that way you won’t startle them. If you’re lucky enough to see large animals like moose or bears, give them plenty of space.

They might feel threatened if you try to approach.
