Statement of Work (SOW) Art Conservation of Wood Sculptural Mural Museum of the Plains Indian – Browning, Montana
1. Background The Historic, located on the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana, houses a historic carved wood mural requiring specialized conservation.
2. Objective To stabilize, conserve, and preserve the historic wood mural in accordance with professional conservation standards and the Museum’s duty to maintain collections as required under federal cultural property guidelines. Work shall ensure long‑term preservation without altering the artist’s original intent.
3. Scope of Work The conservator shall perform the following tasks:
• Perform surface cleaning of the mural using conservation‑approved methods and materials.
• Stabilize areas of cracking, lifting, detachment, or wood loss.
• Address structural issues, including securing loose components or supports.
• Infill areas of material loss only where necessary for structural integrity, using reversible conservation materials.
• Tone or paint areas of necessary fills using reversible methods, ensuring compatibility with the original appearance.
• Apply appropriate conservation coatings, if recommended, to enhance long‑term stability.
• Provide post‑treatment documentation including photographs, materials used, and recommendations for ongoing care.
4. Location & On‑Site Requirements All work will take place on‑site at the Museum of the Plains Indian due to the scale and fragility of the mural. The conservator must transport all necessary tools and materials. The museum will provide reasonable access and workspace during normal business hours.

5. Period of Performance The conservator has confirmed availability for the week of July 12–17, 2026 during which the work is expected to be completed.
6. Deliverables
• Pre‑treatment condition report
• Photographic documentation (before, during, after)
• Conservation treatment report including all materials and methods used
• Recommendations for long‑term maintenance and environmental care
7. Contractor Qualifications
• Professional conservator with demonstrated experience in wood sculpture and Native American art conservation

• Must be registered in SAM.gov to receive contract award per DOI/IBC requirements
