About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a federal contract opportunity involving truck service beds. The Q&A addresses two specific technical configuration questions:
- Structural Supports: The government confirmed that the 4" structural channel steel is not required for the service bed, provided the towing capacity remains unchanged and the bed is made of steel. 2. Compartment Heights: When adding a gooseneck to the truck bed floor, the government prefers a configuration with 40" tall front compartments and 24" tall side and rear compartments. The accompanying vehicle pictures show a white crew cab truck chassis with a flat bed, photographed in a mountainous setting with a yellow wood chipper or similar equipment in the background, indicating the intended use for work or municipal services.

Questions and Answers
1. Question: The structural supports, generally without being classified as a “Heavy Duty” service body, Reading beds don’t have the long sills requested in the structural components. Are those necessary?
Answer: The 4" structural channel steel is not needed as long as, the towing capacity is not reduced and the bed is a steel bed.
2. Question: 2. When adding a gooseneck to the floor of a bed, the height of the service bed boxes is usually decreased to allow more mobility. In the past we have seen, the front compartments be 40” tall and the middle and rear compartments being 24” tall, would you prefer this configuration or 40” all around?
Answer: The 40" front and 24" side and rear configuration is preferred.
