About this file
This attachment provides detailed documentation about the existing air compressor and air dryer systems at the NIST Gaithersburg Campus (Building 302) Central Utility Plant (CUP). The facility currently operates four Atlas Copco air compressors (two ZR110 fixed speed and two ZR160 VSD models) and four ZEKS refrigerated air dryers, typically running three compressors and two dryers simultaneously. The systems operate at 125 psi, with a total capacity ranging from 674-913 CFM per unit, and are currently experiencing capacity challenges that may require a 10-20% capacity increase in future systems.
The government recommends Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco, or approved equal manufacturers for future compressed air equipment. An additional Gardner Denver air compressor (model HRA20-12, 20HP) is noted as being undersized for current requirements. The detailed attachment includes specific asset identification information, including building numbers, manufacturer details, model numbers, serial numbers, CFM ratings, and pressure specifications for each air compressor and air dryer unit in the existing system.

Attachment I - NIST Building 302 Existing Campus Air Compressor and Air Dryer System
Revised: 12/17/2025 RP Byrd
Below is the basic information for the Central Utility Plant (CUP) Air Compressors and Air Dryers that serve the Gaithersburg Campus.
There are four (4) existing CUP air compressors and four (4) air dryer serving the NIST Gaithersburg campus. There is also a Gardner Denver air compressor (model HRA20-12, Pump No. R70, Serial Number D103691, and wired for 20HP/460V/3PH) dedicated to the CUP facility, that is undersized for the requirement.
Existing Air Compressors:
1. The CUP air compressors are Atlas Copco oil free, rotary screw, 125 psi (8.6 bar), 60 hertz units.
2. Two (2) units are ZR110 fixed speed air compressors.
3. Two (2) units are ZR160 VSD (variable speed) air compressors.
4. The NIST Gaithersburg facility generally operates three (3) of the four (4) air compressors at any given time.
5. The initial design of the system, was for one (1) ZR110 and one (1) ZR160 VSD to operate in tandem, and for one set to be in standby. However, the Central Utility Plant (CUP) has had to run a combination of three (3) compressors to meet the NIST campus demand.
a. Not knowing future demand, we may need to increase the capacity of any future compressed air system by 10 to 20%.
Existing Air Dryers:
1. The four (4) air dryers are refrigerated units (using R404 refrigerant), manufactured by ZEKS.
2. The NIST Gaithersburg facility primarily operates two (2) of the air dryers at any given time.
