About this file
This is a technical schematic diagram for an oceanographic mooring system deployed at a depth of 300 meters off the coast of Harvest, California. The mooring is designated HARVEST1 GPS 2025 and was drawn by NOAA-PMEL-EDD on March 24, 2025.
The system consists of a surface buoy equipped with GPS antenna, GPS backup beacon, and amber flashing light, anchored by a 1-meter sea anchor that must be removed after deployment. The buoy is connected via a 20-meter 9/16" copolymer line (doubled for floats) to a non-rotating load cell. Below the load cell, the system employs a 3-meter 1" chain, followed by multiple sections of stainless steel cable (SAS) and chain of varying sizes, connected through 5-ton and 3-ton swivels and nylotron thimbles and boots to reduce tangling. The main vertical line consists of 285 meters of D3/ED jacketed line with sharkbite connectors. At the bottom, the system terminates with a 3400# anchor at dry weight and 1900# anchor at wet weight. The entire configuration includes an 8242 acoustic release mechanism to enable recovery. All shackles throughout the system require wrench tightening, and the schematic indicates a 1.30:1 scope ratio for the mooring.
