STATEMENT OF NEED

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NOAA Fisheries SEFSC/Marine Mammal & Turtle Division Compact ultracold freezer (-80°C), CO2 backup and monitoring

PURPOSE:

An ultracold compact freezer is needed to store genetic samples at -80°C at the leased laboratory at the South Louisiana Community College in Crowley, LA. A freezer is not currently available at this space and needed to conduct genomics research. The freezer must have a CO2 backup system already installed and a remote temperature monitoring system is needed for this freezer.

SCOPE OR MISSION:

Laboratory space has been leased for at least 2 years at the South Louisiana Community College to provide a location for researchers to conduct work while the current genomics laboratory is being renovated. Freezers for sample storage are not available for use at the leased space and a compact ultracold freezer is needed to store genetic samples at -80°C in order for the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division to be able to conduct crucial genomics experiments and data analyses.

BACKGROUND:

The Marine Mammal and Turtle Division genomics laboratory is leasing space at the South Louisiana Community College for at least 2 years to conduct research while the University of Louisiana at Lafayette building that currently houses the genomics laboratory is being renovated. An ultracold freezer is needed at the leased space to conduct work and for temporary storage. The ultracold freezer currently at the University building can not be moved to the leased space because those freezers need to be on generator back-up power for long-term storage of sensitive genetic samples and back-up power is not available in the leased space. Since a generator is not available at the leased space, this purchase must include a CO2 backup system installed in the freezer and a remote temperature monitoring system.
