About this file
This is a construction specification document detailing requirements for Bid Item 2 - Grouted Rock Riprap as part of an Emergency Watershed Protection project in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The document provides detailed technical specifications for furnishing and placing grouted rock riprap, including material requirements, installation methods, and quality control measures.
The specifications require rock riprap to be well-graded between 6-18 inches with specific gradation requirements, and must meet Rock Type 1, Material Specification 523 or West Virginia Department of Transportation approval. The concrete grout mixture must contain Type I or IA cement with 6 bags per cubic yard minimum, water-cement ratio not exceeding 0.50, Size No. 57 or smaller coarse aggregate, concrete sand fine aggregate, and 4-8% air content. Installation requirements include hand-placement around existing structures, use of concrete vibrator for consolidation, temperature maintenance at minimum 50°F during 7-day curing period, and daily temperature monitoring. The work includes subsidiary items such as pollution control, seeding, traffic control, water removal, excavation, earthfill, PVC pipe installation, quality control, geotextile installation, and obstruction removal.

13. Items of work and construction details Items of work to be performed in conformance with this specification and construction details therefore are:
A. Bid Item 2, Grouted Rock Riprap
(1) This item shall consist of furnishing and placing the grout and grouted rock riprap as shown on the drawings.
(2) Included in this item is the removal and disposal of trash and debris within the work areas. Refuse material shall be hauled to an approved off-site landfill. The contractor shall be responsible for landfill tipping fees.
(3) In Section 2, Material, rock shall meet the requirements of Rock Type 1, Material Specification 523 or be from sources with current approval from the West Virginia Department of Transportation. The contractor shall provide a gradation test as specified with the material certification prior to delivery of the riprap to the site.
(4) The statement in Section 2 that begins with “At least 30 days prior to delivery…” is to be changed to read “2 days prior to delivery…”.
(5) Placement of Grouted Rock Riprap shall be by Method 1 in Section 4, Placement of Rock Riprap. The final placement shall have enough voids to accommodate the concrete grout. Rock shall be hand-placed around existing structures, any existing pipes that need to be extended through the grouted riprap and the new drainage pipes that are to extend through the grouted riprap.
(6) The rock riprap shall be well-graded between the nominal sizes of 6 and 18 inches. Well-graded shall mean that a broad range of rock particle sizes are represented and that substantial amount of each rock particle are included.
Not more than 15 percent of the rock particles by weight shall be smaller than 6 inches. Not more than 50 percent of the rock particles by weight shall be smaller than 12 inches. One hundred percent of the rock particles shall be smaller than 22 inches.
(7) The contractor shall submit the grout design to the NRCS for approval a minimum of 7 days prior to placing grout. The concrete grout mix shall be as follows:
(a) Cement shall be Type I or IA.
(b) Minimum cement content shall be 6 bags per cubic yard.
(c) The water-cement ratio shall not exceed 0.50.
(d) Course aggregate shall be Size No. 57 or smaller.
(e) Fine aggregate shall be concrete sand.
(f) Air content shall be 4 to 8 percent.
(g) Ratio of fine to source shall be as recommended by the supplier.
(h) Concrete shall be super plasticized.
(i) Curing compound shall be applied to concrete.
(8) The slump for the concrete prior to superplasticizing shall be a maximum of 3 inches. The maximum slump after adding superplasticizer and prior to placement shall be 7-⅟2 inches. After obtaining slump tests on-site that verify the 3 inches slump, the contractor shall add a Type 2 (Plasticizing and Retarding) admixture which meets the requirements of ASTM C 494. The amount of Type 2 admixture shall be as per manufacturer’s recommendations which will result in a slump, at the point of placement, of 7-⅟2 inches +/- 1 inch with no additional water added. The grout mixture shall be such that the grout may be readily placed without segregation of materials or excessive laitance.
(9) The minimum hose size required for flushing the riprap prior to grouting shall be 1.5” in diameter.
(10) Curing compound shall comply with ASTM C 1315 Type 1, Class A.
WV-EWP-FIELDS CREEK 62–7
(11) The concrete shall be consolidated into the voids with the use of a concrete vibrator. A smooth surface is not to created be the grouting operation.
(12) The concrete grouting operation shall be performed in the presence of the engineer or the engineer’s representative.
(13) Grouted Rock Riprap placement during cold weather shall be as described in Section 10 of this specification. The curing period during which concrete temperature shall be maintained at minimum 50 degrees Fahrenheit shall be 7 days. Concrete surface temperature shall be checked daily with a max/min thermometer, and the temperatures recorded for documentation and provided to the engineer.
(14) Measurement and Payment shall by Method 1, except that the filter or bedding material and the rock riprap are subsidiary to this item.
(15) Items of work subsidiary to this bid item are:
(a) Pollution Control, Construction Specification 5
(b) Seeding, Sprigging, and Mulching, Construction Specification 6
(c) Traffic Control, Construction Specification 9
(d) Removal of Water, Construction Specification 11
(e) Excavation, Construction Specification 21
(f) Earthfill, Construction Specification 23
(g) Drainfill, Construction Specification 24
(h) PVC Pipe, 3” Diameter, Construction Specification 45
(i) Contractor Quality Control, Construction Specification 94
(j) Geotextile, Construction Specification 95
(k) Obstruction Removal, Construction Specification 401
