Site Preparation include sitearea selection soil testing weed control tillage typeRow1: In early-mid September 2020, apply appropriate burndown herbicide application to kill the existing cover crop and take representative soil tests of all fields. Apply lime and the recommended fertilizer the year after seeding (in 2021, see detail below).
Planting Method include planting depth seedbed firmness planting equipmentRow1: In the late summer or early fall of 2020, take representative soil samples. In early-mid September 2020, seed the grass/clover mix approximately 1/8-1/4" deep. Seed 14 lbs meadow fescue, 8 lbs perennial ryegrass, 8 lbs orchardgrass, 5 lb red clover. In spring 2021, allow the new plants to grow to 10-12 inches (not to exceed 24"), rotary mow to a height of 5-6 inches and bale biomass if grass height was greater than 12" (to avoid smothering new seeding), allow to regrow to 10-12 inches again (not to exceed 24") and mow to 5-6 inches a second time and bale biomass if grass height was greater than 12" (to avoid smothering new seeding), allow to regrow a third time. Apply fertilizer according to soil test recommendations in May-June 2021.
Operation and Maintenance include monitoring for water stress control undesirable plants checks for bare spotsinsect damagediseases soil testing to manage fertilization and pH monitor yieldRow1: Monitor new plantings for water stress; Control undesirable plants if their presence threatens the establishment or persistence of the stand, using the mowing pattern detailed above. Periodically check to identify bare spots or eroded areas and re-seed as necessary. Conduct field inspections to identify insect and diseases that could be threatening stand survival.
