About this file
This document is a U.S. Coast Guard Computerized Maintenance System procedure (Maintenance Procedure Card R-Q-17489) for inspecting Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) cylinders. The detailed procedure covers comprehensive inspection steps for SCBA cylinders, including checking manufacture and hydrostatic test dates, visual inspection for damage, valve assembly examination, leak testing, and cleaning. Key requirements include ensuring cylinders do not exceed 15 years from manufacture date, are hydrostatically tested every 5 years, and undergo careful examination for cracks, delamination, impact damage, and other potential defects.
The procedure provides specific instructions for personnel, including downloading a cylinder log, verifying cylinder information, documenting maintenance actions, and submitting updated logs electronically. Safety is emphasized throughout the document, with multiple warnings about proper handling, personal protective equipment, and potential hazards. The maintenance process involves using specific tools and consumables like a utility pail, dishwashing compound, leak test compound, and machinery wiping towels. After inspection, personnel must record maintenance actions, notify appropriate officers of any discrepancies, and properly dispose of or store hazardous materials used during the procedure.
