About this file

This document contains questions and answers related to the August Roads (CA2023-1) 27N02/29N30 federal contract opportunity solicitation number 12970224R0022. The key details are:

The solicitation calls for the use of biaxial geogrid for both primary and secondary reinforcement on the August Roads project, rather than a separate uniaxial geogrid. Contractors can reference Section 714 - Geosynthetic Material of the FP-14 Standard Specifications to determine the exact specifications for the required biaxial geogrid, with a preference for Type 3 and Type 4 as alternatives. The geogrid will be used on both FS road 29N30 and 27N02 locations. The document also notes that an alternative geogrid can be submitted for evaluation at the time of proposal if the specified types are not available.

12970224R0022 Questions and Answers

1. I would like to see if I can get some clarification on the Geogrid on the August Roads 27N02/ 29N30 Project . The Drawings show a (Primary reinforcement) Uniaxle Geogrid and I don’t see a spec or a quantity for that particular Geogrid. The Bid items show Biaxle geogrid with a quantity. Is the Uniaxle part of the bid quantity for the Biaxle or should there be a separate quantity for it?

So, the biaxial geogrid is a "do-all" for both the geosynthetic materials (uniaxial and biaxial geogrid). Another line item is not necessary as the biaxial geogrid covers it.

To clarify the drawing, the Reinforced Soil Slope Typical drawing shows both Uniaxial and Biaxial layering. We will use Biaxial in place of uniaxial, so biaxial will be used for both primary and secondary reinforcement.

Section 261-REINFORCED SOIL SLOPE from the FP-14 Standard Specs. Both Section 207-Earthwork Geosynthetic and Section 261-RSS will reference Section 714- Geosynthetic Material. Here the contractor can check out the exact specs for biaxial geogrid.

2. The Biaxial Geogrid has a Type 1 through 5 under that 714-6 spec guideline can we clarify which type we are going to be using?

For the Biaxial Geogrid, Type 3 will do. If Type 3 is not available for whatever reason, Type 4 is a good alternative. The same geogrid will be used at both locations, on FS road 29N30 and 27N02.

Additional Note:

If you can not find a biaxial grid that meets type 3 or type 4 you can submit an alternative at time of proposal that will be evaluated to see if it meets criteria.
