About this file
This request for quotation from the USDA Agricultural Research Service seeks a borehole nuclear magnetic logging instrument with shock-proof casing to support groundwater monitoring efforts. The system must be operable by a two-person crew without specialized equipment, conduct CPMG measurements in wells from tens to hundreds of feet deep with sub-meter resolution, and support a range of probe sizes including the requested 2.38-inch diameter. It must achieve 500 microseconds or less echo spacing, include a reference coil channel, withstand 2000 PSI, and feature a sensitive shell over 8 inches to allow multi-frequency work. Accompanying data processing and inversion software is required. Quotes are due by September 11th, 2023 with delivery within 60 days of award to the USDA location in Davis, California.

Minimum Requirements and Specifications
Borehole nuclear magnetic logging instrument
20-Jun-2023
Background:
The USDA-ARS Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems unit uses a range of geophysical techniques to monitor managed aquifer recharge operations. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) systems are uniquely capable of imaging the water content in the subsurface, offering a high degree of utility for our groundwater mapping and monitoring efforts. NMR systems operate by energizing hydrogen protons in groundwater using a tuned, oscillating electromagnetic pulse and then measuring the time-decaying signal as the protons relax to their equilibrium state. Since the signal strength is proportional to the number of energized protons, we can infer the water content in the subsurface from our signal strength.
Borehole NMR systems are deployed in a predrilled hole, gradually lowering the probe to the maximum logging depth while acquiring data. In saturated systems, these measurements can assess the pore size distribution and estimate the hydraulic conductivity of a formation.
Ultimately, we need a system that is:
• Capable of providing high-quality, high resolution NMR logs in 2.38-inch diameter wells
• Able to image past the disturbed zone of typical 2.38-inch wells, typically 6-8 inches in diameter.
• Capable of supporting long-term monitoring projects
• Sufficiently rugged to handle most weather conditions seen in California’s Central Valley, particularly high temperature conditions.
Operational Specifications
1. The system must be operable by a two-person crew of reasonable physical fitness (able to carry 50 lbs) without the need for specialized equipment to transport the system.
2. The system must be able to conduct spin-echo CPMG measurements.
3. The system must be able to log boreholes ranging from tens of feet to hundreds of feet in depth.
4. Must support sub-meter resolution logging.
Instrument Specifications:
1. The system must be able to support a wide range of borehole NMR probes; while we are interested in a system that fits inside 2.38” PVC wells, future efforts may focus on larger diameter wells.
2. The system must be capable of 500 microsecond echo spacing or less
3. The system must support at least one reference coil channel.
4. The system must be rated to at least 2000 PSI
5. The sensitive shell diameter must be greater than 8 inches, and the system must support multi-frequency measurements.
6. The system must come with data processing and inversion software for field data visualization.
