About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding Solicitation Number 12905B23Q0162 for two quarantine walk-in plant growth chambers to be installed at a Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service facility in Hilo, Hawaii. The growth chambers must be installed in a dedicated 42'W x 80'L x 16'H building and include features such as vertically adjustable shelving, independently dimmable lighting in white, red and far-red spectrums, an insulated and drained floor, and a remote air-cooled condensing unit with separate circuit power. The contractor will be responsible for installing the air-cooled refrigeration system, running all required utilities, and placing any remote condensers on the concrete slab outside. Configuration 1 is preferred for the anteroom and growth room layout.

Ques ons and Answers
1. Room dimensions: Please confirm external dimensions, including height requirements.
a. ANSWER: External dimensions can vary but should be less than 10 in height.
2. Are there any building limita ons around where the chamber will be installed, ie. how much space is around the external walls and above the chamber external ceiling?
a. ANSWER: The building will be dedicated to the growth chambers and should be 42’W x
80’L x 16’H. The intent is to have mul ple growth chambers housed within the building.
3. Does the ves bule/anteroom need separate temperature/humidity control?
a. ANSWER: No, this is just a room for containment and no separate temperature or humidity control is needed.
4. Does the ves bule need just simple working ligh ng with on/off light switch?
a. ANSWER: Yes, just ligh ng is needed.

During our pre-solicita on/market-research discussions with the researcher we offered and the researcher really liked the design of a floor drain and condensate that drained into a wastewater tank that is treated with UV ligh ng that is then sent via a condensate pump to a drain. Should this be a requirement since this is labeled as a “Quaran ne” walk-in chamber?
a. ANSWER: Yes, UV treatment is needed to be sure to devitalize poten al plant pathogens.
8. Are each of the three ers of shelving in each walk-in room ver cally adjustable?
a. ANSWER: Yes, it should be ver cally adjustable to accommodate for different plant heights.
9. Regarding ligh ng, you call out white, red, and far-red ligh ng but should each color be independently dimmable? In pre-solicita on/market research discussions with the researcher, this was a seemingly must have requirement.
a. ANSWER: Yes.
10. Please confirm that no convenience receptacles are required in either of the walk-in rooms or in the anteroom.
a. ANSWER: No convenience receptacles are needed to for the anteroom; this room just needs a light switch. A convenient receptacle would be helpful in the walk-in room in case other supplemental instruments are needed, but this is not a requirement.
11. Please confirm distance of remote, air-cooled condensing unit from walk-in chamber
a. ANSWER: The remote air-cooled condensing unit would be located in an area immediately outside of the building.

a. ANSWER: Yes, if it can accommodate plants 20 to 72” in height.
14. What are the dimensions of the footprint allocated to the two growth rooms and anteroom/ves bule?
a. ANSWER: It should be less than 35’ x 25.
15. What is maximum height measured from the floor to the lowest point of the roof structural or duc ng, conduit, pipework, sprinklers in the loca on where the growth rooms are to be installed?

a. ANSWER: Configura on #1
17. Bid specifica ons call for growth rooms supplied with an Air-cooled refrigera on system(s).
Does the client prefer a remote air-cooled condenser or a remote air-cooled condensing unit?
a. ANSWER: Remote air-cooled condensing unit.
18. Who is responsible for installing the air-cooled system?
a. ANSWER: The contractor.
19. Where will the remote air-cooled condensers be mounted?
a. ANSWER: It can be placed on the concrete slab outside the building.
20. Who is responsible for running all required u li es (refrigera on piping, electrical service, control wiring & conduit from each growth room to the air-cooled refrigera on system?
a. ANSWER: The contractor.
21. Is the air-cooled refrigera on system to be powered directly from the growth room, or will it be powered by a separate circuit?
