PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A. Examine the site for conditions that might preclude layout of fence as designed. Make field measurements and verify locations before installation. Contractor shall stake location of any utility lines. Failure to do so shall result in Contractor absorbing the cost of all repairs necessitated by damage to utility lines.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2
INSTALLATION
C. Stake locations of fence lines, gates, and terminal posts. Do not exceed intervals of 500 feet (152 m) or line of sight between stakes. Indicate locations of utilities, lawn sprinkler system, underground structures, benchmarks, and property monuments.
D. Install framework, fabric, accessories and gates in accordance with recommendations of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute, ASTM F567 and more stringent requirements specified.
E. Workmanship: The complete fence shall be plumb, both in line and transverse to the fence, straight and rigid with fabric tightly stretched and held firmly in place. Install fencing with bottom of fabric flush with grade. Details of construction, not specified shall be performed in keeping with good standard fencing and barbed wire practice.
F. Concrete: Set all posts in concrete, designed to have a minimum compressive strength of 3000 PSI at 28 days. Allow all posts to set at least seven days before top rails, center rails, wire fabric and fittings are installed.
G. Terminal Posts: locate terminal posts at each fence termination and change in horizontal or vertical direction. Space between terminal post and line post not more than 10’ apart. Set in concrete 60” deep and not less than 12” in diameter. All posts to be vertical and plumb.
H. Line Posts: Space line posts uniformly, not more than 10’ apart. Set in concrete 60” deep and not less than 12” in diameter. All posts to be vertical and plumb.
I. Top Rails: Install in lengths of 21’. Connect ends with sleeves forming a rigid connection, allow for expansion and contraction.
J. Check each post for vertical and top alignment, and maintain in position during placement and finishing operations.
K. Rails: Set rails as nearly parallel to finish grade as possible and at the specified height shown on the Drawings.
L. Center Rails: Install mid rails between line posts and attach to post using rail end or line rail clamps.
M. Bracing: Install horizontal brace and truss assembly at mid-height or above for fences 6’ and over at each fabric connection to the terminal post. The diagonal truss rod is installed at the point where the brace rail is attached to the terminal post and diagonally down to the bottom of the adjacent line post. Place the truss rod in tension by adjusting the turnbuckle.
N. Bottom Rails: Install bottom rails between posts and attach to post using rail end or line rail clamps.
O. Fabric: Fabric shall be full height as shown on details. Where applicable, all fabric shall be attached to outside of the building area of the fence line with the ties spaced at 1-foot intervals (Maximum) on all posts and 2-foot intervals (maximum) on all rails, with no sharp ends projecting. Selvages shall be twisted top and knuckled bottom throughout, as detailed. Fabric shall be tightly stretched and securely fastened with fittings and accessories provided by the manufacturer. Minimum width of fabric on fences over six feet (6’) in height shall be eight feet (8’). Fabric on high fences shall lap or splice only at intermediate rails. All fabric shall be in contact with top of mowing strips – no gaps allowed.
P. Fasten fabric to top rail, line post, braces and bottom tension wire/bottom rail with tie wire at maximum 12” on center.
Q. Attach fabric to end, corner and gate posts with tension bars and tension bar clips. The tension bars shall be of lengths two inches (2”) less than the full height of the fabric with which they are to be used. Bars shall be attached to the fabric by threading through the fabric, by bands or other mechanical means, and installed at all terminal or corner posts and gate posts.
R. Install gate fabric to match fence installation.
S. Replacement of damaged materials will be as directed by the Contracting Officer, at the Contractor’s expense.
3.3
TOLERANCES:

B. Variation in line of posts: ¼” in 20 feet horizontal (1/2” maximum overall).
C. Gates: Adjust gates to operate smoothly, easily, and quietly, free of binding, warp, excessive deflection, distortion, nonalignment, misplacement, disruption, or malfunction, throughout entire operational range. Confirm that latches and locks engage accurately and securely without forcing or binding.
3.4
