About this file
This document outlines technical specifications for airtight cryogenic rack enclosures. The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Plains Area seeks to procure 175 rack enclosures within four months of award. Each enclosure must accommodate a 5.5" x 5.63" x 28.56" rack inside dimensions and have maximum exterior dimensions of 6.5" x 6.5" x 29." Materials must withstand temperatures from -195C to 55C and internal pressures up to 95 kPa. Enclosures must remain airtight after autoclaving at 121C and 15-18 psi for 30 minutes as well as exposure to water, 10% bleach solution, and 2% Virkon-S solution. A one-year parts and labor warranty and two-year materials and workmanship warranty is required. Final design specifications must be provided prior to manufacture.

I. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
1. Quantity
a. One hundred seventy-five (175) containers.
b. First item produced required for final acceptance testing before full-rate production initiation
c. Manufacture and deliver 175 total units within four months of contract award.
2. Dimensions (see Figure 1 below)
a. Inside of container and lid must accommodate a rack with dimensions:
5.5” x 5.63” x 28.56.”
b. Container with lid, handle, and latches shall be no more than 6.5” x 6.5” x 29.”
Figure 1: Dimensions of rack and container
5.63”
3. Construction
a. Material to withstand use in pressurized environments as specified below (e.g., high-strength marine-grade 5456 aluminum, grade 316L or better stainless steel).
b. Surface and edges will be deburred with chamfered edges to allow for safe handling.
c. Surface finish will not be painted, or powder coated. Chemical or anodizing finishes are acceptable.
d. Material thickness sufficient to withstand repeated use in the operating environments described below.
e. Integrated seal ensuring airtight closure when the lid is affixed to container in operating environments described below.
f. Lid:
i. Affixable to the container, with handle accessible from the top and ergonomically comfortable for a human hand
ii. Support lifting of the container and up to 50 pounds of contents
iii. The fastening mechanism will ensure container with lid is airtight, yet not require excessive manual dexterity to open and close
iv. Exterior locking mechanism that when engaged prevents the seal from being released
g. Container engineered to minimize damage to internal contents from vibrations and accidental drops to the maximum extent possible.
h. Each container (matched set of container and lid) will display a permanent unique identifier (i.e., an identification number).
i. Each lid will have a threaded ¼” or 3/8” NPT port that will be used for pressure testing and gasket seal verification.
4. Operational Environment
a. Airtight at intended use temperature range of −195°C to +55°C for an extended time.
b. Airtight at an internal pressure differential of at least 95 kPA (at a temperature range of -195°C to +55°C).
c. Repeatedly autoclavable at 121°C, 15-18 pounds per square inch (psig) of pressure, for 30 minutes.
d. Airtight after repeated, minimum 1-hour exposures to:
i. Water
ii. 10% bleach solution
iii. 2% Virkon-S solution
iv. Vaporized hydrogen peroxide
II. SYSTEM FOOTPRINT
Each container (rack enclosure) has maximum dimensions of 6.5” x 6.5” x 29.0”
III. WARRANTY
The containers (rack enclosures) will have a warranty of one-year parts and labor, and two years for defects in materials and workmanship from the date of shipment.
IV. DOCUMENTATION
The Vendor shall provide a copy of the final design specifications prior to manufacture of the containers.
