WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES – 02665
DIVISION 2 – SITE WORK
02665 – WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES
This section specifies waterline distribution installation, including all necessary fittings (valves, tees, etc.), and disinfection and pressure testing. New waterlines shall replace existing operating waterlines. A ground (electric/water) pedestal shall be installed to provide enclosure and connections for the electrical and water lines going up to the cabin. The pedestal should provide drainline, valve, and hosebib connection. The pedestal shall be constructed near northwest corner of tower leg for Volunteer Lookout Tower. The existing pump information shall be provided when work is ready to start. Water is supplied to the kitchen sink in the tower cabin and to the shower facility adjacent to the tower.
1.2 – Submittals:
1. Pre-insulated pex tubing and fittings, Aquapex, Sharkbite, or an approved equal.
2. Fasteners – Supports, clamps, hooks, fasteners, escutcheons, and any other type of supports or protective devices.
3. Pedestal/Lockable Enclosure – Enclosure shall be lockable, and sized such that a standard
Padlock can be utilized. Enclosure shall be made such that it can be closed while being connected to the pump supply and controls, when it is operational. See photos below to view the existing configuration.

2.1 – Pipe – PVC Waterlines, Valves, PEX Waterlines
1) All waterline components shall be certified and approved by NSF/ANSI Standards 60 and
61. All sections of the waterline shall be replaced.
A) Provide ½” white pre-insulated aquapex tubing and fittings, or an approved equal.
a. All sections of the new waterline shall be of same material.
b. The waterline shall be installed with appropriate slope such that all water can be drained from the system.
c. Use only approved connection methods and tools per selected manufacturer.
d. All lines shall be secured appropriately such that all water can be drained from the system.
B) Provide one standing support/pedestal, at location to be determined by COR, near northwest corner of tower leg, to provide water and electrical connections for pump controls and supply. Contractor shall submit design and product information to COR for review and approval prior to any construction and/or ordering of materials.
a. Pedestal assembly shall have a drain valve to drain all water at end of each season.
b. A threaded hosebib with valve shall be installed to be able to use as a sampling point.
c. Pedestal shall be lockable. The lockable hardware shall be sized to fit a typical Forest Service Yale padlock.
Photo of connection – pump fiberglass tank.
Location near NW corner of tower leg.
d. Electrical connection ends between the pedestal and FS pump must be made compatible to make it operable.
3.1 – Pipe Installation
All the supply waterline installations are above grade. Provide appropriate supports compatible to the existing structure and mount securely to the tower.
Handle and install pipe per manufacturer’s instructions.
Pipe Protection: Keep interior of pipeline and joining surfaces clean. Plug exposed ends of pipe at end of work shifts.
Cutting Pipe: Make all cuts square and ream. Do not use damaged pipe.
Lubricated Joints: Use only non-toxic and water soluble lubricant.
Pipe Alignment and Grade: Where necessary to avoid existing obstacles, pipelines may be realigned slightly. Slope all lines to drain or AS SHOWN ON DRAWINGS.
Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended maximum deflection. Deflections in excess of these limitations require special bends or a sufficient number of shorter pipe lengths.
3.2 – Hydrostatic Testing
A. Perform hydrostatic test of all waterlines. Furnish all equipment necessary for tests. When all pipe connections are complete, fill the pipe system with water and pressurize to 150 psi. All air should be expelled from the pipeline during filling and again before making the pressure test. Conduct a 4 hour leak test with the Inspector or Engineer present.
Test each section at a minimum of 150 psi at the point of lowest elevation in the section, for a period of 4 hours.
Maximum allowable overall leakage for a test section is:
L = NDP, where
L = Allowable leakage, gph N = Number of joints in test section D = Nominal diameter of pipe, inches P = Square root of the average test pressure, psig
Repair any visible leakage at joints and repeat the test. If overall leakage is above maximum allowable, repair the pipeline and repeat the test. Continue this procedure until leakage is within the allowable specified.
3.3 – Disinfection of New Waterline
Disinfect all newly installed pipelines after hydrostatic testing is completed in the following manner:
Disinfecting Agent Chlorine as sodium hypochlorite, solution of known strength.
Disinfecting Solution Strength and Measurement Mix the chemical with the water entering the pipeline to obtain a minimum of 50 mg/l chlorine concentration. The following table can be used to calculate required chlorine based on strength product used:
To achieve 50 mg/l (ppm) per 1000 gallons volume to be disinfected use
5% chlorine bleach – 1 gallon 25% powder - 1 lb. – 11 oz.
70% powder - 9.6 oz.
100% gas - 6.7 oz.
Open valves as necessary to allow solution to fill and circulate throughout the entire system.
Test all outlets and ends of pipe works to ensure that the chlorine solution has reached the entire system.
Disinfection Period Retain chlorine solution in the system for a minimum of 24 hours. Test for chlorine residual at the kitchen sink in tower cabin. If free chlorine residual is below 10 mg/l, repeat disinfection cycle. During the disinfection period, operate all valves in the treated segment of pipeline to disinfect the appurtenances.
Final Flushing and Test Following disinfection, flush pipelines with potable water until the chlorine residual is no higher than one mg/l. The Government will collect two samples; one at least 24 hours apart. An independent laboratory will conduct bacteriological tests on all samples.
If the initial disinfection fails to achieve potable bacteriological quality, repeat the disinfection procedure until satisfactory results are obtained.
4.1 – Method of Measurement
The potable water system installation work; including all components of the pedestal, as specified in this section, will be measured as one Lump Sum Quantity (LSQ).
4.2 – Basis of Payment
Payment will be made at the contract lump sum unit price as listed in the “Contract Schedule of Items” for quantities measured and accepted as follows:

GRAY WATER DISPOSAL SYSTEM – 02731 34
DIVISION 2 – SITE WORK
02731 – GRAY WATER DISPOSAL SYSTEMS
As noted on the drawings and specified herein, install new perforated pipe gray water disposal system, at 24’ long, with waste line connections from Volunteer lookout tower kitchen sink. The disposal system includes a plastic 55 gallon drum assembly as a front end settling tank, which is connected to the perforated leach pipe.
1.2 – Submittals
Submit O&M/product data for the perforated pipe, and 55 gallon drum to the Contracting Officer’s Representative for approval prior to ordering the material.
2.1 – Gray Water Disposal Systems
Provide 24’ of PVC 4” perforated pipe conforming to ASTM D-2729 and approved for underground leaching systems. Provide ABS pipe and fittings conforming to ASTM D-2751 as waste lines, sized to transition from the disposal leach lines to final connections at the cabin kitchen drain line and shower drain. Provide 1(one) 55-gallon plastic drum with lid as settling tank.
3.1 – Gray Water Disposal System Installation
Connect gray waste lines from the Volunteer kitchen sink drain. Construct new gray waste line from existing pipe and extend to new location of disposal system. See the construction drawings for the approximate locations of the settling drum and leach lines. Waste lines will be carried 8’ from the buildings and then each shall be connected to a 55 gallon plastic drum with access lid. Set the drum with enough bury to provide room at the bottom for settled solids, with liquid effluent on top draining into the leach lines at their specified depth. See the drawings for details. Effluent line connections at the drums must be water tight, drum penetrations must be backed with flange assemblies.
