Placement of Pipe: Place so its full length (except for couplings) bears uniformly on the bedding material. Do not lay pipeline in water.
Pipe Protection: Keep interior of pipeline and joining surfaces clean. Plug exposed ends of pipe at end of work shifts.
Cutting Pipe: Make all cuts square and ream. Do not use damaged pipe.
Lubricated Joints: Use only non-toxic and water soluble lubricant.
02665 – WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES 26
Pipe Alignment and Grade: Where necessary to avoid existing obstacles, pipelines may be realigned slightly. Slope all lines to drain or AS SHOWN ON
Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended maximum deflection. Deflections in excess of these limitations require special bends or a sufficient number of shorter pipe lengths.
3.3 – Valves
See section 02641 - Valves
3.5 – Anchor Blocks
Place anchor blocks upon undisturbed soil. Place anchor rods to bear firmly and evenly around pipe or fixture being secured.
3.6 – Hydrostatic Testing
Perform hydrostatic test of all waterlines. Furnish all equipment necessary for tests.
Test as follows:
Preparation: Do not backfill couplings and fittings prior to test. Brace couplings and fittings to prevent movement during testing. Backfill other portions of waterline prior to test so no movement can occur when the line is under pressure.
Allow all thrust blocks in test section to cure for 48 hours, minimum, prior to testing.
Flush all pipelines.
Furnish and install all temporary supports, blocking and plugs, necessary to run the test. Remove after testing.
All air should be expelled from the pipeline during filling and again before making the pressure test.
Testing: Perform test in the presence of the COR as follows:
Test each section at a minimum of 150 psi at the point of lowest elevation in the section, for a period of 4 hours.
Maximum allowable overall leakage for a test section is:
L = NDP, where
L = Allowable leakage, gph
02665 – WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES 27
N = Number of joints in test section
D = Nominal diameter of pipe, inches
P = Square root of the average test pressure, psig
Repair any visible leakage at joints and repeat the test. If overall leakage is above maximum allowable, repair the pipeline and repeat the test. Continue this procedure until leakage is within the allowable specified.
3.7 – Disinfection of New Waterline, and new pumphouse plumbing, and Well
Disinfect all newly laid plumbing and waterlines after hydrostatic testing is completed following instructions in ADEQ Engineering Bulletin #8, “Disinfection of
Water Systems”.
Disinfecting Agent Chlorine as a liquid or powder/tablets, Sodium hypochlorite or
Calcium hyprochlorite, solution of known strength.
Disinfecting Solution Strength and Measurement Mix the chemical with the water entering the pipeline to obtain a minimum of 50 mg/l chlorine concentration. The following table can be used to calculate required chlorine based on strength product used:
To achieve 50 mg/l (ppm) per 1000 gallons volume to be disinfected use
5% chlorine bleach – 1 gallon
25% powder - 1 lb. – 11 oz.
70% powder - 9.6 oz.
Open valves as necessary to allow solution to fill and circulate throughout the entire system. Test all outlets and ends of pipeworks to ensure that the chlorine solution has reached the entire system.
Disinfection Period Retain chlorine solution in the system for a minimum of 24 hours.
Test for chlorine residual at a representative number of outlets. If free chlorine residual is below 10 mg/l, repeat disinfection cycle. During the disinfection period, operate all valves and hydrantrs in the treated segment of pipeline to disinfect the appurtenances.
Final Flushing and Test Following disinfection, flush pipelines with potable water until the chlorine residual is no higher than the existing water supply system or one mg/l. The Government will collect bacteriological samples. One at the well and one at the EPDS. An independent laboratory will conduct bacteriological tests on all samples.
If the intial disinfection fails to achieve potable bacteriological quality, repeat the disinfection procedure until satisfactory results are obtained.
02665 – WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES 28
Measurement will not be made for items contained in this section
Payment for work items continued in this section will not me made separately.
Items contained in this section are considered incidental to other work.
