b. Background The residence at 190 Paradise Road, Government Building 471, was damaged when a tree limb fell on a roof during the January storms. Local fire staff was able to remove the branch from the roof, however roofing repairs and gutters are needed to restore the house to livable conditions.

Top to bottom - remove shingles from the roof peak to the roof bottom layer of shingles.
Side to Side – cut neat the sides to a constant width into the undamaged shingles.
Remove damaged sheeting/plywood, any rafters, flashing and gutters. Damaged underlayment is to be cut that bisects the nearest undamaged rafter joints enough to allow proper weight distribution for new sheeting.
Carpentry Replace any damaged roof sheathing per Spec section 06201. Replace approximately 36 linear feet of 2”X8” fascia board per Spec section 06201, including priming and painting per Spec section 09912.
Repair or replace section of damaged rafter. (2” x 6”) Example: should the rafter be damaged or cracked, cut out section of rafter no less than 2” beyond the damage or crack. Replace with similar or better lumber per Rough Construction (Section 61000) and laminate/sandwich equal or better lumber on both sides of the repair not less than three feet up and down the rafter. Excepting if the replacement does not extend beyond three feet on the down-slope side. At that point, install the down-slope to conform with the rafter including a ‘Bird’s Mouth’ cut over the top wall plate to the inside of the rafter block.
Replace roof sheeting with appropriate thickness and equal or better quality plywood/OSB and nail or staple as prescribed in Section 61000 using not smaller than 8d ‘sinker’ nails or appropriate staples at 6” OC around the edge and 12” OC in the field. On the bottom sides of the sheeting, roof clips are required. On the top, set appropriate spacing for typical roof sheeting.
Roofing Underlayment Install new roofing felt per Spec section 07335. Pry up intact shingles and overlap new roofing felt 1’ over the existing underlayment on each edge of the roofing repair. Install roofing felt from roof bottom to the peak.
Shingles Install 3 tab shingles per Spec section 07335. Overlap new shingles with undamaged/intact roofing section as needed. Replace ridge shingles at peak for the width of the damaged section.
Apply roofing mastic at the intersection of the repair envelope and the intact roofing section per Spec section 07920, to create a waterproof roofing system.
Flashing and Sheet Metal:
Replace 2”X2” drip edge at the roof bottom as needed, per Spec section 07600.
