About this file
This is a site visit information document providing clarification on the scope of work for fume hood repair and exhaust system replacement at the National Science Laboratory-Blakely, a USDA reference laboratory for aflatoxin testing in nuts and nut products. The document clarifies a discrepancy identified during the May 20 site visit hosted by Mike Miller, the Contracting Officer's representative, regarding the number of exhaust systems requiring replacement.
The key clarification is that while the laboratory contains 11 traditional fume hoods with sashes and monitors, there are 12 exhaust fan and stack assemblies requiring replacement. The 12th assembly serves an over-the-counter hood similar to a kitchen stove hood, which lacks a traditional sash and monitor but requires replacement of its external motor along with all other assemblies. Consequently, contractors must plan for replacement of 12 blower/stack assemblies rather than 11. This information is critical for accurate scoping and pricing of the repair work, which includes disconnecting existing electrical connections, removing and installing new exhaust fans and zero pressure caps, installing PVC flex connectors and exhaust stacks with guy wires, completing new electrical connections, replacing fume hood alarms, conducting OSHA-required testing, calibrating alarms, and replacing fume hood lights.

12639526Q0134, Fume Hood Repair
Mike Miller, who hosted the site visit on May 20, sent the CO this information:
There seemed to be a little confusion about the fact that we have 11 hoods but 12 exhaust fans and stacks. The 12th one is not a fume hood with a sash and monitor. It is an over-the-counter hood like a kitchen stove hood. However, it has its own motor outside that will need to be replaced along with all the others. So, there are 12 blower/stack assemblies that need replaced.
