2.0 STATEMENT OF WORK FOR FNI 205 Yeast Extract
2.1 Purpose
SCOPE
The Government intends to procure purchase order for Fermentation Nutrients Ingredients 205 (FNI), primary yeast. FNI 205 contain a high level of protein in the form of readily and easily assimilated amino acids, peptides and other factors known to stimulate growth and metabolite production in many types of fermentation. FNI 205 is a dietary ingredient added to the diet for the production of various fruit flies including Mediterranean and Mexican fruit flies.
Background:
Fruit flies (Tephritidae), in particular Mediterranean (Ceratitis capitata) and Mexican fruit (Anastrepha ludens) flies, are some of the most serious exotic plant pests threatening United States (U.S.) Agriculture.
The cost of infestations to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the citrus industry can exceed $33 million dollars per year. If not eradicated or managed, the cost has been estimated at $821 million or more per year.
Objective
One of the key components in the rearing process of Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Lowe) is the consistent production of high quality and quantity of eggs. This is achieved through the use of an adult diet formula consisting of hydrolyzed yeast and sugar. FNI 205 has been shown through studies by our CPHST Scientists to produce the best quality egg production in our Mexican Fruit Fly colony within the rearing facility. Other yeast extracts have been tested but the results have yielded inferior quality and quantity of Mexican Fruit Fly eggs. Without yeast extract, it would not be possible to rear the Mexican Fruit Fly for the Sterile Insect Release program in Texas.
2.2 CONTRACTOR DUTIES:
The yeast extract must be of high quality and free of contaminants in order to meet fly production requirements. All products must meet the following specifications:
FNI 205
Moisture < 6% pH (2% solution 5 – 6 Protein (N X 6.25 on DM > 47% Salt (NaCl) on DM < 3% Total Plate Count < 10000 CFU/g Yeast < 50 CFU/g Molds < 50 CFU/g Coliforms < 10 CFU/g E. coli Not detected/g S. aureus (Coag +) Not detected/g http://www.bio-lallemand.com/glossary/protein/
Salmonella Not detected/25g
The yeast must produce an egg hatch rate at a minimum of 80% to around 90%. The current yeast is producing a hatch rate between 85%-95%. This is the standard needed for good quality eggs.
