About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding solicitation 12639521R0015 for the rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer system at the USDA campus in Ames, Iowa. The major work includes replacing approximately 413 linear feet of 8-inch gravity sewer pipe with new PVC pipe and installing 134 linear feet of 6-inch PVC gravity sewer pipe. Two new manholes will be determined in the field, and their locations should be provided using GPS coordinates. Four buried manholes are to be located, cleaned, and inspected, adjusting their height up to one ring if needed to match grade. The USDA will label known manholes and be available to verify locations on the first day of work. Except for segments from MH-2 to MH-3 and MH-5 to MH-9, existing pipe material is vitrified clay. A one-week notice is required to relocate animals from affected pastures. Abandoned sewer pipe must be completely filled, and lining work stops at MH-25.

Questions and Answers, solicitation 12639521R0015

1) Concerning new piping for Building 520:

a. Is the new sewer piping connecting outside of Building 520 at an existing stub or is there work to be done inside the building? The new sewer piping will connect to existing piping outside of Building 520.

b. Does USDA have specific locations for the new manholes (labeled 6A & 6B) or are these to be determined in the field? Locations will be determined in the field early during the construction process.

c. What location information does USDA require for new manholes (i.e., GPS, dimensions from known structures …)? USDA would prefer GPS Location information.

2) Concerning manholes that need to be located, should they be raised to existing grade after they are found? Concerning the four manholes listed as “Not Located” on the drawing, the Statement of Work says to “Locate, clean, and inspect the Four (4) Manholes that are shown as buried but show on prints.” The expectation is that the manholes would be uncovered after they are located and, if necessary, adjusted slightly (up to one 2” ring added) in height to match existing grade.

3) Will USDA label manholes with numbers as indicated on the drawing prior to work starting or will USDA personnel be available on first day of work to verify locations of manholes? USDA will be available on first day of construction to walk the project with contractor to verify location of known manholes. USDA will also attempt to paint corresponding manhole numbers on known manholes prior to the walkthrough.

4) What is the pipe material of existing pipe being relined? With exception of the segments from MH-2 to MH-3 and MH-5 to MH-9 which are PVC, the pipe is Vitrified Clay Pipe (VCP).

5) For the manholes in the animal pens, how much notice must be given to get the animals moved prior to work? A minimum of one-week notice is required to relocate animals in the affected pastures.

6) For the sewer pipe to be abandoned in place, will it need to be completely filled or just the ends capped/sealed? The abandoned sewer pipe is to be completely filled.

7) How far East of MH-25 will the lining need to be installed? Lining work stops at MH-25. The drawing inadvertently shows it continuing to the east of MH-25, which is in error.
