About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding a federal solicitation to automate a moth collection system. The solicitation seeks a programmable logic controller and associated valves to replicate an existing prototype system across 96 cyclones and 48 dust collection lines, totaling 144 valves needed. The prototype uses EZ-valve electric waste valves model E1003 with 3-inch connections. A timing diagram is not available, but the automatic drops currently occur once per hour via a sprinkler timer. Photos of the prototype wiring show fan motors that are 120V, 1/3 horsepower and shut off during drops. The scale collection boxes for each cyclone measure 8-3/4x17-1/2x16 inches with a 12x3 inch screen and no internal diverters. The cyclones are divided between two cold rooms containing 24 cyclones each, for a total of 96 cyclones.

PLC to Automate a Moth Collection System 12639521Q0165

· Is it correct that the deliverable is not just a PLC, but rather a replacement of the current control cabinet with a new cabinet that implements all necessary controls using a PLC? If so, the deliverable would include fabrication and wiring of the cabinets, along with programming of the PLC.

There is no “current control cabinet.” All valves and switches are actuated manually, apart from those controlled by the prototype automated system. That prototype system is to be replaced with a system that replicates its function across all cyclones and coolers.

· The SOW notes that the program seeks a PLC and associated valves. Could additional information be provided on the associated valves (valve types, size, quantities)?

The current prototype automatic drop system is using an EZ-valve electric waste valve system, model E1003. Valve connections at the bottom of the cyclones are 3". We have 96 cyclones and 48 dust collection lines, total of 144 valves needed.

· Is a logic or timing diagram provided for the existing prototype's functionality?

As for timing, the automatic drops are once an hour and operated by a sprinkler timer on the prototype. It is an irritrol, model MC12-plus. No other diagram available for timing.

· Are schematics or a block diagram available for the current prototype wiring (valve types and number, fan types and power ratings, etc.)?

See photos in pdf form. The fan motors are 120V, 1/3 horsepower single phase motors. RPM is 3450. These motors shut off when the automatic drop valves open and tum back on when the automatic valves close. Each cyclone has a fan motor for moth collection.

· The SOW also notes addition of a scale collection box, screen, and tray holders. Are more pictures or mechanical drawings available of the current prototype?

The scale collection box is 8-3/4" x 17-1/2" x 16". The screen is 12" x 3".

No diverters inside the box. The only openings are at the valve connection on top and the screen on both sides.

· The SOW notes replication of the box, screen, and tray across both coolers and all cyclones. How many cyclones are available?

There are 96 cyclones. There are 48 cyclones in each of two cold rooms. In each cold room there are two ‘sets’ of 24 cyclones: 12 on the north wall and 12 on the south wall in each set. We typically refer to each such set of 24 cyclones as a cooler.
