Statement of Work Project: Acquisition of Unique Herd of Unselected Holstein Cattle

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: Acquisition of unique herd of Holstein cattle that have maintained the integrity of having been unselected for milk production or any other traits since 1964.

2.0 Background: Current dairy herd husbandry practices focus highly on the selection of genetics based on their cattle’s ability to produce more milk. Cattle today produce an average of over twice the amount of milk per cow than cows did 50 years ago. While that may be a worthy attribute in today’s dairy herds, focusing on that attribute alone has led to challenges. These cattle have demonstrated to be resistant to mastitis, a prevalent and costly disease in many herds. This herd is a unique genetic resource that has many immune traits and associated genetic variants that no longer exist in modern Holstein cattle and are incredibly valuable genetic and scientific resource. These cattle will be used in immune challenges of endemic and emerging diseases of dairy cattle including mastitis, brucellosis, tuberculosis, and highly pathogenic avian influenza.
