Crop Tree Release

Crown release up to 109 trees per acre (20’X20’), do not release poor quality trees just to meet the 109 TPA.

Additionally, remove all bent over ice damaged regeneration that is still alive (< 5” DBH). Regeneration that only has stem breakage do not need to be removed.

Selecting a crop tree

1. White Pine greater than 6 feet tall.

2. Single stem maple

3. Stump sprout origan trees

4. Other quality trees that meet criteria below

Quality Crop Tree Criteria

a. Vigorous crowns – green leaves, no dead branches in the upper crown

b. Live crown ratio = 40%

c. Balanced crown (no bare quadrants)

d. Forks are U-shaped

e. Bole is free of defects.

Release Treatment Guidelines

a. Release by cutting all trees less than 5” DBH

b. Cut trees within 5 feet of the bole of the selected crop tree. When releasing white pine, cut trees within 8 feet of the bole.

c. Remove trees with crowns touching the selected crop tree.

d. Remove trees that are overtopping the selected crop tree. Trees overtopped by the crop tree do not need to be cut. They can be left to help limit the risk of epicormic branching.

e. Reduce stump sprouts to 1 or 2 per stump that originate at or below ground level.

Prune and Release

Tree Release – Release 194 tpa (15’x15’) of white pine and red oak. These trees should be growing straight, tall, and free of defect. Selected white pine or oak should be released from all surrounding live woody vegetation within a 5-foot radius from the base of each tree (measure bole to bole). Trees with crowns touching the selected crop tree or overtopping the crop tree should also be removed.

Woody vegetation includes:

* Poles, saplings, and seedlings.

* Woody perennial shrubs such as but not limited to hazelnut, alder, willow, fire/pin cherry, service berry, etc. that are at least 1/3 the height of the conifer needing release. Annuals such as grasses, sedges, ferns, etc. do not need to be cut down.

* Trees greater than 5 inches at breast height will not be cut.

Selecting Release Trees

1. Oak should be favored for release over white pine.

2. Crop trees should be less than 5” DBH and greater than 5’ tall

3. Tree characteristics

a. Vigorous crowns – green leaves, no dead branches in the upper crown

b. Live crown ratio is at least 40%

c. Balanced crown (no bare quadrants)

d. Forks are U-shaped

e. Bole is free of defects.

Pruning – Release white pine will be pruned with hand pruners, lopping shears, or pruning saws only. No pruning by chainsaws will be allowed. All live and dead limbs should be pruned off the lower 9 feet of the bole or half the height of the tree. No more than half of the crown should be removed.
