1. Background The U.S. Forest Service, Gila National Forest, requires the procurement of one (1) tow-behind tire road packer for use in aggregate road maintenance operations on National Forest System roads. The tow-behind rubber tire road packer will be operated behind a motor grader to compact freshly graded road surfaces. The equipment shall provide kneading compaction using multiple tires mounted on independent walking beams, allowing the compactor to follow uneven road surfaces typical of forest road systems. The equipment shall be new, unused, and of current production.
2. Scope The contractor shall furnish and deliver one (1) tow-behind tire road packer with associated mounting hardware and components as specified herein. The tow-behind rubber tire road packer shall be similar to the WR90-36R Oscillator Series 3 Walk-n-Roll Packer/Roller manufactured by Al’s Metal Work. The brand name is provided for reference purposes only to establish the level of quality and functional capability required. Equivalent equipment shall meet or exceed all salient characteristics identified in this Scope of Work. Delivery shall be made to Silver City, New Mexico.
3. Salient Characteristics Designed for operation behind a motor grader during gravel road maintenance operations Compatible with both Caterpillar 140 and Caterpillar 150 type motor graders Minimum 90-inch compaction width Independent walking beam suspension system allowing the compactor to follow uneven road surfaces Oscillating frame or twin sub-frame design capable of maintaining tire contact across variable road contours Minimum twelve (12) smooth rubber roller tires Tire size approximately 7.50 × 15 Designed for compaction of aggregate and native surface roads Overall weight sufficient to provide effective kneading compaction (approximately 3,500 – 4,500 lbs) Structural frame designed for heavy-duty road maintenance operations
Example Picture:
4. Mounting System The tow-behind rubber tire road packer shall include a quick-attach mounting system compatible with Caterpillar 140 and Caterpillar 150 motor grader ripper assemblies.
Allow secure attachment to the rear ripper assembly of the motor grader Provide stable towing during compaction operations Be designed for safe operation during grader travel and road maintenance activities
5. Hydraulic Accumulator System The tow-behind rubber tire road packer shall include a hydraulic accumulator system designed for operation in uneven or mountainous terrain.
Absorb shock loads encountered during compaction operations Reduce excessive bouncing or vibration of the compactor Improve compaction effectiveness on uneven road surfaces
6. Articulating Hitch Assembly The tow-behind rubber tire road packer shall include an articulating hitch assembly allowing the compactor to follow the motor grader during turning operations.
Maintain alignment behind the motor grader Operate effectively during turns and curved roadway sections Maintain compaction performance during grader maneuvering
7. Submittals Manufacturer product specifications – Confirm compatibility with both Caterpillar 140 and Caterpillar 150 type motor graders Documentation demonstrating compliance with the salient characteristics identified in this Scope of Work Manufacturer warranty information Provide delivery timeline
