Specifications for Wildlife Opening Management – Mowing and Disking
Wildlife Opening Mowing Wildlife openings and access roads are to be mowed with a tractor and heavy duty mower, such as a bush hog. Wildlife Opening sizes vary between 0.5 and 12 acres.
Mowing shall be performed between October 1 and November 15 with all work completed no later than November 15 of each year.
Most of the openings are currently vegetated with shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, with some sapling trees. There may be downed trees in the openings or access roads, which will require pushing with a tractor or bucking up with a chainsaw and moving to the edge.
Disturbance of vegetation outside the area shall be minimized. Any standing timber outside the area shall not be disturbed. Movement of large amounts of soil will not be acceptable.
Access The contractor shall protect all trails, roads, ditches, fences and other improvements in the project area from any damage resulting from operations.
Roads and trails shall be kept free of logs, slash, and debris. Any road, trail, or structure used by the contractor that is damaged by their operation shall promptly be repaired by them. The contractor will clear downed trees and debris from the access road. This clearing may be accomplished with the tractor or chainsaws.
Debris and downed trees must be removed from the road and pushed to the side of the road. The contractor will mow the road into the wildlife opening.
Equipment Requirements Tractors must be equipped with Roll Over Protection System (ROPS). Tractors and implements must be washed and clean prior to moving onto Forest Service lands to prevent the spread of non-native invasive plants, such as Cogongrass.
Tractors and implements must be of sufficient size and horse power to conduct heavy duty mowing and disking of shrubs and small saplings.
Storage of Equipment The contractor may store materials and equipment at the work site at their own risk. All materials must be kept in an area designated by the COR and be maintained neat and orderly.
Contractors are encouraged to visit the sites prior to submitting bids.
