102-Trail Surfacing Description
Preparation of Subgrade.
Restore the trail template to its original condition by removing slough and berm. Fill ruts and troughs and reshape back slopes. Restore drainage and other trail structures. Remove all duff, debris, stumps, roots, and excavation from within trail bed. The trail bed shall be smooth and free of irregularities. Place all excavated material, regardless of its nature, from within the trail way and uniformly spread 4 feet outside the trail way, on the downslope, not more than 4 inches in depth. Do not obstruct drainage or create piles, berms, or windrows of debris. During all phases of construction use reasonable measures to minimize damage to the soil including offsetting wheel tracts.
Slough and Berm Use suitable slough material within the trail way to restore the trail bed. Remove berm when daylight can be obtained with a maximum tread width of 5 feet unless otherwise DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND.
Fill Material and Borrow.
Use suitable material to fill ruts, troughs, and potholes in the tread that cannot be leveled and out sloped through performance of work.
Reshaping and Finishing Trailbed and Back slopes.
Provide a firm and uniformly finished trail bed in accordance with drawings. Leave no vertical backslopes. Provide a uniform and roughened surface on disturbed backslopes.
Surfacing Furnish, haul, water, place and compact the aggregate surfacing on the prepared trail bed. Surfacing material shall be free of excess moisture, frozen lumps, roots, sod, or other deleterious material. Do not furnish material that contains weeds or weed seed. The COR shall approve the physical characteristics and quality of the materials before placing on the trail.
Spreading and Compacting Use aggregate that is uniformly mixed at optimum moisture content and spread and compact in layers to the final thickness and width SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Adjust the moisture content of the material to a moisture content suitable for compaction. Remove irregularities and produce a smooth, even surface. Obtain compaction by mechanical vibratory compactors over the full area until visual displacement ceases, but not fewer than three passes. A pass shall consist of one complete coverage of the surface. Obtain written approval of the trail bed by the COR before placing aggregate.
Handling Materials.
Stockpile, remove, transport, and spread aggregates in a manner that shall preserve gradation and avoid contamination. Do not intermingle stockpiles of aggregate having different gradations. Remnants of the aggregate stockpiles located along the trail shall be uniformly spread 4 feet outside the trailway limits, not more than 2 inches in depth. Do not obstruct drainage or create piles, berms, or windrows of debris
Haul Roads.
The Contractor shall maintain haul routes to pre hauling condition or better and inspect haul routes prior to hauling aggregate. Dust caused by hauling operations on roads that create a hazard to traffic or a nuisance to the public shall be treated with dust abatement as necessary to control the dust. On County roads the contractor shall coordinate with county road superintendents, to determine which dust control measures will be used. Contractor shall reduce speed to 25 miles per hour or less when hauling adjacent to occupied structures.
Tolerances.
Do not vary the total compacted thickness of the aggregate by more or less than ½ inch from the specified thickness or place it consistently below or above the specified depth. Do not vary the aggregate width by more than 3 inches from the specified width or place it consistently narrower or wider than the specified width. On flat trail way segments with no side slope, aggregate shall have a one-inch crown on the aggregate surface. In no case shall the final grade of the compacted aggregate be lower than the existing ground line.
Measurement. Measure the Section 102 pay items listed in the bid schedule according to section 906
The method of measurement is Compacted in Place quantities.

103-Geogrid
Placing and Overlapping Unroll the geogrid in the direction of travel so that the roll is parallel with traffic patterns. Adjacent geogrid roll should be shingled in the intended direction of aggregate spread. Cut and overlap the geogrid to accommodate curves. Overlap the geogrid 2’ at the ends.
Tensioning and Pinnning Place the geogrid flat and free of tension, stress, or wrinkles and without tearing or causing damage. Damaged geogrid will be rejected by the CO and replaced at the contractor expense.
Geogrids may be anchored in place to maintain overlaps and alignment over the coverage area. Before fully unrolling the geogrid, hold the geogrid in place with pins, staples or piles of aggregate.
Spreading and Compacting Aggregate Prepare all trail construction as required under Section 102. and the following: place the aggregate onto the geogrid from the edge of the geogrid or from previously placed aggregate. Don’t operate equipment directly on the geogrid. Turns and sudden stops should be avoided. The maximum thickness of any one layer shall be 6 inches loose thickness. Use approved methods to compact aggregate surfacing.
NOTE: The Geogrid may be Tensar HX5.5 Geogrid or an approved equal. An “equal” item shall comply with the salient physical, functional, and performance characteristics provided in the Description of work. (FAR 11.104 –Use of Brand Name or Equal Purchase Descriptions).
Measurement. Measure the Section 103 pay items listed in the bid schedule according to section 906
Use the method of measurement that is DESIGNATED IN THE SCHEDULE OF ITEMS.

201-Trailhead Surfacing
Preparation of Subgrade.
Clear the existing Trailhead (TH) of vegetation and obstructions and place the excavation adjacent to the TH in approved locations. Do not damage vegetation designated to remain. If damage occurs, repair or replace the vegetation in an acceptable manner. Blade the full length and width of the TH (150’ x 75’) to provide adequate water runoff and restore the original cross section and grade. After the finish blading the TH shall be smooth, free of berms and ruts and shall be crowned or graded to drain (2%-6%). No existing surfacing or road material shall be wasted.
Spreading and Compacting.
Furnish, haul, water, place and compact 200 cy of aggregate surfacing evenly over the full length and width of the TH. Spread and shape the aggregate on the prepared surface in a uniform layer. Blade the surface during the compaction operations to remove irregularities and produce a smooth surface. Compact the aggregate on the TH by operating spreading and hauling equipment, or other approved methods, over the full width of each layer of the aggregate until visual displacement ceases.
Measurement. Measure the Section 201 pay items listed in the bid schedule according to section 906
Use the method of measurement that is DESIGNATED IN THE SCHEDULE OF ITEMS.
