About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file related to a heating and cooling equipment replacement project. The Q&A addresses three key questions about furnace and air conditioning unit specifications. The primary intent is to replace existing electric air handlers with high-efficiency, Energy Star-rated electric furnaces and compatible two-stage air conditioning units. Specific clarifications include confirmation that the project will maintain an electrical system, with Energy Star electric furnaces being acceptable, and that the furnaces and AC units should be compatible, particularly in terms of two-stage functionality. The document indicates that additional information about equipment in another building will be posted on SAM.gov.

Questions and Answers

1. The "plans" attachment lists the existing AC and furnace equipment, the furnaces in those plans are both electrical air handlers with electric heat 30kw. It says multiple times on the solicitation forms, "minimum 95% efficiency furnace required with 80,000 BTU" which indicates a gas furnace. So, is the plan to remove the electric air handlers and replace with natural gas furnaces or is there something missing? Also, is there any information you can provide about the existing equipment at the other building?

We definitely want to stay with an electrical system, replacing with a high efficiency energy star rated furnace is the intent of the project.

I will get the info on the other buildings AC unit and post it in SAM.gov.

2. Are we suppose to propose an electric furnace if so we cant meet the 95% efficiency.

Also if these are fuel. Do we know if they are natural gas or propane?

The intent is to replace existing electric furnaces with energy star electric furnaces. High efficiency, energy star furnaces will be accepted.

3. The equipment for the air conditioning says it needs to be a two-stage unit. The only way to gain efficiency from the air conditioning side is also to have a two-stage furnace.

Should i propose a two-stage furnace also?

The furnaces and AC Units should be compatible.
