About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the repair of the bronze John Stevens statue located at Memorial Square in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The key requirements include:

The contractor must remove the statue from its sandstone base, repair bullet holes, dents, and cracks, and then securely reattach the statue to a new top course of the sandstone base. The repairs must blend in with the existing statue patina. The statue must be stored off-site between removal and reattachment, which must be coordinated with a separate stone mason contract to refabricate and replace the missing top sandstone block. The contractor's key personnel must have experience with bronze statue detachment/reattachment and repair. The contract deliverables and schedule require the statue removal by October 31, 2024, repairs and storage by October 31, 2025, and final reattachment by October 31, 2025. The contractor is responsible for their own travel expenses.

Project John Stevens Statue Repair

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

This project is for the repairs to the bronze John Stevens statue. It is located next to the granite Roosevelt Obelisk at Memorial Square on top of Marias Pass on the Rocky Mountain Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest (see attached location maps). The statue needs to be removed from its sandstone base, repairs made to the bullet holes, cracks, and dents, and then reattached to its sandstone base. The statue will need to be stored off-site between the time of detachment and reattachment.

Currently, there are two bullet holes that have punctured the statue (one in the head and one in the chest), an additional three bullet dents in chest and three in the head, and one crack in the chest. There may be additional dents or cracks that need repaired once the statue is removed and closely inspected. The repairs will need to blend in with the patina on the rest of the statue. It is unknown on how the statue is attached to the sandstone block, but there is a plugged cut square access hole at the base of the statue granting access to the inside of the base—likely made to access the statue attachment mounts to the sandstone base. Extreme care must be taken during the detachment and re-attachment of the statue to its sandstone base so as to not crack or cause further damage to the sandstone blocks.

Note that there is currently a missing sandstone block from the base that used to be the top course that the statue was attached to. Since that block is missing, the statue is currently attached to the second course.

Once the statue is removed, a stone mason under a different contract (in conjunction with repairs to the adjacent granite Roosevelt Obelisk) will refabricate and place the missing sandstone block to the top course of the base. This is the reason why the statue has to be detached and re-attached to its sandstone base. Since this statue repair contract is responsible for the detachment and re-attachment of the statue, and the other contractor is responsible for the refabrication and replacement of the top sandstone base block, coordination will be required between the two contractors in regard to timing. The statue repair contractor will be responsible for off-site storage of the statue between the time of detachment and reattachment.

2.0 Background

The larger-than-life size John F. Stevens Statue was sculpted by Gaetano Cece in April 1925, and then cast in bronze by Jno. Williams Inc. N.Y. in 1925. John Stevens was the first European to locate and survey the pass in 1889 for the Great Northern Railway.

The statue originally was located on the west side of Highway 2, but then relocated to its current location on the east side of the highway in 1989 next to the Roosevelt Obelisk (which was also moved to this current location) during the creation of Memorial Square. The statue was previously removed for repair of multiple bullet holes in 1985 by Bob Scriver of Browning, Montana. It was likely at this time (either during the removal of the statue for repairs, or during the move of the statue) that the top sandstone block on the top course of the base was damaged and removed. The statue is currently attached to the second course of the sandstone base as the top/third course is missing.
